Over the past two decades I have regularly highlighted in my press interviews the funding challenges the NHS faces, when it comes to cybersecurity. The situation is made more difficult as healthcare professionals have to chose between better patient care and seemingly less important investments like cybersecurity. Better patient outcomes should and often do win the day. In this article representing Graylog, Inc. I go into more detail on the subject and how the underinvestment in cybersecurity in the NHS is a risk to us all. Do you think it's time for the government to provide more significant dedicated cybersecurity funding to the NHS, so they don't have to pick between patient care and better cyber resiliency? #graylog #TDIR #SIEM #CLM #cybersecurity #NHS #hacking

In recent developments, Ascension, a significant player in the US health care scene with facilities across 19 states, has suffered a notable disruption due to a cyberattack. This incident affects not just the operational capacities of 140 hospitals and 40 senior living facilities but also highlights the acute vulnerabilities in healthcare cybersecurity. The attack, detected through unusual activity in Ascension's systems, prompted an immediate investigative response, emphasizing the criticality of swift action in crisis scenarios. Ascension has taken preventative measures to mitigate any further risk, showcasing a proactive approach in handling cyber threats. This situation underscores a worrying trend in the healthcare sector where critical services are becoming frequent targets for cybercriminals. Such incidents stress the increasing necessity for advanced cybersecurity measures. Organizations must adopt comprehensive strategies to protect sensitive data and ensure continued service delivery without interruption. Acknowledging the severity of this incident serves as a crucial reminder of our responsibilities in safeguarding digital infrastructures. As professionals in technology and cybersecurity, it is imperative to continue fostering resilient systems and advocating for stricter security practices, especially in sectors as vital as health care. #TechTrendTeller #Cybersecurity #HealthcareInnovation

***Healthcare Cybersecurity Performance Goals - Minimum Mandatory Cybersecurity Standards for Hospitals Coming Soon. Thanks to my friends at Information Security Media Group (ISMG) for the opportunity to discuss the American Hospital Association's position on behalf of the Nation's hospitals and health systems. To be clear: - We strongly support the cybersecurity practices identified in the CPGs - we helped develop and write them. - Our concerns include proposals that the regulations would only apply to hospitals and health systems. Yet, a major source of cyber risk that impacts hospitals and health systems originate from insecure third-party technology and service providers. The standards need to apply to all entities servicing healthcare. - Significant barriers to implementation of the CPGs may exist for less resourced hospitals - such as a lack of human, financial and technical resources. - Proposed penalties and fines are overly harsh and may in effect impact under-resourced hospitals disproportionally higher - harming the hospitals that actually need the most help. - We are happy to continue ongoing dialogue and collaboration with the National Security Council, The White House, (NSC) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Our conversations with the NSC directly resulted in the groundbreaking partnership with Microsoft and Google to provide free and heavily discounted services for rural and non-profit hospitals to help fill the resource gap. https://lnkd.in/embhcn9W Come hear my esteemed colleagues from the healthcare sector and government engage in lively discussion / debate about these and other important issues on 7/18 in NYC at the ISMG Summit. https://lnkd.in/eN9uJpiT Health-ISAC, Errol Weiss, Sunil Dadlani, Melanie Fontes Rainer, Christopher Frenz, Ravi Thatavarthy, CISSP, Lynette Sherrill, Hugo Lai, Cory Brennan, JD, Karen Habercoss, MBA, MSW, Aaron Weismann, Phil Englert, Marianne McGee U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency FBI Cyber Division #oneteamonefight #cybersecurity #ransomware #hospitals
