"The global risk landscape in 2025 is shaped by an intricate web of geopolitical conflicts and regional instabilities. Ongoing wars in the Middle East, deepening schisms in the Balkans, and the escalating chaos across the Sahel region are just a few of the crises that will challenge governments, multinational organizations, and travelers alike. Combined with gray zone warfare, interstate conflict, transnational organized crime, terrorism, and the rising threat of natural disasters driven by climate change, these multi-faceted crises will demand comprehensive and proactive risk management strategies to protect businesses and their people." How far do you need to go from a conflict zone to truely be safe? I was asked this question a few months ago and laboured over the answer for days. In risk management we have an obligation to consider not only the immediate and obvious, but also the second- and third-order effects. This is true for any crisis event, whether conflict, a natural disaster or any other major disruption event. In this article I answered just one facet of the many considerations that goes into keeping people safe in those inherently unsafe environments. https://lnkd.in/g9xKCCWw

#Security #RiskManagement "The review includes perspectives on the kidnap, extortion, accident and health, active assailant, maritime piracy, terrorism and political violence risks that are likely to characterise the year ahead." "Whilst the Annual Review takes an analytical and statistical look back at 2023, we have also looked ahead in 2024. 2024 has been dubbed the 'year of elections'and the team have looked at how this may impact our clients' ability to operate around the globe, whether through geopolitical consequences, civil conflict or economic instability. The summer of 2024 also sees the world of sport focused on Paris for the XXXIII OlympicGamesand the team have included their own focus on the games in this report. There is also a section on the terrorism landscape 2024, with some insight into the evolving and diverse threats that could dominate terrorism activities in the year ahead." "As we look back over 2023, a year dominated by conflict in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine, as well as regional crises in North Africa and political unrest in Latin America, it has certainly been a challenging year for many of our clients to navigate. Throughout 2023, particularly in the latter stages of the year, there was a feeling that global geopolitical events had the very real ability to escalate even further and, as a result, deteriorate the security situation in several countries and their surrounding regions. Some notable themes from this years' report include the impact of people movements, the increase in active assailant incidents in Europe and the resurgence of state and technology supported terrorism. Weekend Reads: 🌏As global violence and armed conflicts surge, it’s crucial for businesses to anticipate the impact on operations and strategy. Despite the rise in turmoil, official military spending has remained stagnant relative to GDP, reflecting a shift in geopolitical power dynamics towards fragmentation. This trend poses multifaceted challenges for businesses operating in conflict zones. Safety concerns for employees, damage to infrastructure, and disruptions to supply chains are just a few of the hurdles to navigate. Moreover, operating in such environments carries significant reputational risks. In light of these challenges, global businesses should consider having a robust Political Violence and Terrorism (PVT) insurance policy for mitigating risks in conflict zones and safeguarding your company’s assets and personnel. As geopolitical tensions persist and smaller actors seek to alter the status quo, companies must stay vigilant and adapt their risk management strategies accordingly. Understanding the implications of upcoming political risk events is paramount for global business resilience. #Geopolitics #BusinessStrategy #RiskManagement #GlobalBusiness #ConflictResolution #PrivateSecurity

Navigating the Complexities of Security Risk Analysis in a Dynamic Geopolitical Landscape Before launching into the complex venture of security risk analysis (SRA) 📊 it is essential to understand the geopolitical landscape in which your organisation thrives. This comprehension constitutes the foundation of our SRA strategies. However, finding reliable and accurate data from official sources in developed countries can be a huge challenge ⚠️. How can we fill this gap? 🌉 A security manager in developed countries, should understand the current geopolitical situation 🌍, identify conflict zones, and engage with local communities for effective risk analysis. Regularly following news, understanding the counterterrorism strategy, and collaborating with law enforcement agency and civil society are also crucial. 💡 The key lies in collation. By mixing government data with independent research and reviews, it's possible to get a more holistic picture of the security situation that encompasses from corruption to Terrorism and insurgency. By mixing sources in this way, we can navigate the troubled waters of risk analysis and make more informed decisions. 💡 In addition, engaging with local experts, academics, and professionals in the field. They can provide valuable insights and data that might not be available through official channels. 💡 Even more so, we need to foster a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing. Sharing our experiences and knowledge can strengthen our understanding and approach to security risk analysis. 💡 At the end, the geopolitical environment is dynamic. Regularly update your knowledge and adapt your strategies to keep up with changes. What strategies do you find effective? “In wicked (complex/dynamic) domains, the rules of the game are often unclear or incomplete, there may or may not be repetitive patterns and they may not be obvious, and feedback is often delayed, inaccurate, or both” - Epstein, D.
