Huge congratulations to you Oscar N. Onyema, OON. As a very private person, I would not normally post something like this but it's only to give honor to whom it is due.
From the early days of working closely with you on revising the Equity market micro-structure, simulating the order book, you taught me so much about how to develop, test and launch new products. I took every note from those review meetings carefully and watched you with admiration as you taught me. I should let you know that I even applied for a PhD in market micro-structure...lol. Every market benchmarking exercise, meant I got to learn about many more markets globally, as this was one of the many things you expected before we discuss product or initiative. You also learnt and taught me how important stakeholders especially intermediaries and investors.
It's no wonder Nigeria became one of the first, if not the first to issue a Sovereign Green Bond, because from the Exchange we saw that opportunity, floated the idea and mobilised stakeholders to make it a reality. From trying to trade the Tax Credit Note, create onshore Gold ETFs, offshore LCY bonds to creating a Triparty SLB market, Introducing Trade Reporting Facility, Retail Bonds, Derivatives market and much more! I remember how we engaged tirelessly to ensure Nigeria remained in emerging narket equity Indices, bridging the engagement gap between index providers, international investors, and policy makers. Or the many deliberations and advocacy papers, once any policy or regulation will have a negative impact on the Capital Market.
We may not have fully achieved it all, but we always tried! We pushed through those limitations and popped up new and "crazy" ideas. It was very clear you had heart for change and excellence, and the Capital Market was where you demonstrated that. It became super easy and fun for me as I enjoyed working as a true agent of change in the capital market, under your leadership at the Exchange.
I personally want to acknowledge how you believed in me, gave me that platform to learn, grow, and enjoy my passion for capital markets. From my humble days starting as a product analyst, I became head of secondary market. I will also acknowledge my first boss Dipo Omotoso, who not only made sure I always got a foot in the door but that my ideas were heard.
Thank you, and I hope you still find a platform to build more markets in the region!
All the best and God bless you Oscar!
