✨ Our project, "OPAL for Humanitarian Action (OPAL4HA)," was selected out of 379 applications by the WFP Innovation Accelerator to address climate-induced migration in Senegal. 🌍 OPAL4HA leverages diverse data sources, including Mobile Network Operator data from Orange-Sonatel Senegal, call detail records (CDRs), earth observation (EO) data, qualitative data, official statistics and client data to understand and respond to challenges like flooding, using privacy-preserving mechanisms. 🔎 Our goal? To empower disaster response teams, policymakers, and affected communities with private, sensitive, or otherwise hard-to-access data by extracting insights and indicators in an ethical, participatory, and safe manner. #Africa is the fastest urbanising continent in the world. By 2050, the population is expected to double, while putting additional pressure on cities. Urban growth in Sub-Saharan Africa has just begun, with two-thirds of cities yet to be built. We need to think about climate change impacts, including urban heat island effects and flooding, combined with the doubling of the population and an urban transition, will significantly increase climate-related health threats and further degrade cities’ livability. The 6th Africa Climate Resilience Investment Summit (ACRIS VI) will be held in Kigali, Rwanda (12-13 March, 2024), and there will be a panel discussion on resilient cities. NDF's Aage Jørgensen will be sharing about our work in his opening remarks. Over 40% of West Africa’s GDP comes from the coastal areas, where almost one-third of the population lives. 🌍 However, coastal degradation is a serious threat for people and communities living there. The West Africa Coastal Areas Management Program (WACA), active since 2018, is focused on solving the coastal challenges. 💡 Now, we can see some #PositiveChange in the region. We have published a series of impact stories to share these results with you. 🌊 “The ocean – which was our friend, the salt of our life – has become our enemy, eating away in its wake our houses, our lands and our wealth. WACA has reconciled us with the sea.” – Alexis Aquereburu, Mayor of Anétho from #Togo. Reflecting on Kenya's Climate Progress at ACS@ONE Thematic Convenings I had the privilege of attending the ACS@ONE: Civil Society Organisation (CSO)-led Deep Dive Reflections on Key Thematic Areas, marking one year since the inaugural Africa Climate Summit (ACS 2023). This gathering was a powerful moment to review the Nairobi Declaration outcomes and explore the next steps for a sustainable Africa. At ACS@ONE, we examined the progress Kenya has made across different thematic areas, starting with Theme 1: Climate Adaptation and Resilience on November 4th, 2024 driven by insightful and engaging sessions on sustainable agriculture food security and resilience; urban infrastructure , climate resilient cities and urban centers ; repositioning climate change adaptation knowledge sharing approaches ; drought resilient systems , drought vulnerabilities impact to peace and security. These sessions have not only highlighted the milestones achieved but also allowed for critical discussions on challenges faced and emerging opportunities. Excited to continue supporting meaningful change for a resilient, sustainable future. Let’s keep the momentum going! 🌱💪 Jacob's Ladder Africa PACJACI AGRA Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH #ACSAtONE #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Kenya #RoadToACSAtONE

🌍💡March 2024 marked a milestone for INACCT Resilience as we convened in Beira, Mozambique, and Durban, South Africa for two learning labs, one of which included an exhibition. Together, we welcomed municipal officials, academics, diverse organisations, and, most importantly, the community members directly impacted by the climate-induced flooding that has gripped these regions in recent years. During these events, we gained critical insights and forged connections that underscore the essence of resilience in the face of climate change. Themes of #collaboration, #funding, and #inclusion emerged as cornerstones for effective climate resilience strategies. Dive deeper into our impactful initiatives by watching the recap video now available on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/dDBa3p8X or catch up on the event highlights in our latest write-up: https://lnkd.in/dzkpgX7r The INACCT Resilience research project is dedicated to fortifying proactive, inclusive, and evidence-informed urban resilience planning. It focuses on informal settlements and vulnerable communities in coastal cities across Africa, ensuring no voice goes unheard in the pursuit of a more resilient future. We’re excited to continue paving the way for #ClimateAction, and fostering #UrbanSustainability through genuine #CommunityEngagement. #CLimateAdaptationREsilience #INACCTResilience Featured in this video: Sean O'Donoghue, Catherine Sutherland, eThekwini Municipality, University of KwaZulu-Natal, @BeiraMunicipality, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

🌍 This week marks the launch of the #GlobalShield in Madagascar! The first workshop in Antananarivo successfully concluded this week with a joint reflection on the most urgent financial protection needs in the country that is heavily impacted by climate change. Devastating tropical cyclones and prolonged droughts are among the most severe climate disasters that affect the most vulnerable communities on the island. Under the leadership of the Malagasy Government, through the Cellule de Prévention et d'appui à la Gestion des Urgences (CPGU) within the Prime Minister's Office, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, high-level representatives and experts in the field of #climaterisks and #financialprotection came together in this 2-day event to: ℹ Receive information on the Global Shield initiative and available support for Madagascar 🌱 Review existing initiatives in the country that the Global Shield can build on 👨👩👧👦 Identify further stakeholder groups to be included in the process 🔎 Discuss financial protection gaps For further information on upcoming activities in Madagascar, join the Global Shield Country Community here: https://lnkd.in/gyt_gjWn Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) & Vulnerable Twenty Group (V20); Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ); Global Shield Solutions Platform

🌿 Today marks the United Nations’s International Day for Biological Diversity and we’re thrilled to announce our participation in a new project to strengthen biodiversity and climate resilience in cities! Through the implementation of nature-based infrastructure, as well activities which engage and benefit women and vulnerable communities in Dire Dawa (Ethiopia), Kigali (Rwanda), and Johannesburg (South Africa), the SUNCASA project hopes to demonstrate a “triple win” for #climate, #society, and #biodiversity through #gender-responsive nature-based solutions. Working alongside colleagues at the International Institute for Sustainable Development, World Resources Institute, and with support from Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, the Nature-Based Infrastructure Global Resource Centre will be undertaking Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi) assessments of all three cities – so watch this space! 🔎 Visit the SUNCASA website to find out more: https://lnkd.in/eYM4YRC3 #biodiversity #climateadaptation #genderequality #greeninfrastructure #naturalinfrastructure #resilience #nature #nbs #naturebasedsolutions #climatechange #watermanagement #greencities
