ABOUT TRULY GREAT HOTEL MANAGERS This interview with an executive of The Peninsula Hotels that touches on their philosophy for hiring managers resonates with my own. If a hotel is able to hire a professional who trained at one of the world's top hotel schools, then the chance of getting the real deal hospitality package of skills and attitude is very high. Outside of these elite group of hotel professionals, it's like winning a lottery to hire someone with an authentic sense of hospitality. After interviewing so many potential candidates to replace my amazing general manager Napo -- yes, I won the lottery that time -- who has been with La Esperanza Granada since Day 1 but is soon embarking on the next chapter of his life, I realized that a real sense of service and a talent for organization is what I should be looking for and professional skills are desirable but only secondary. The skills can be learned via a hotel consultant over several weeks or months, but the real attitude is either there or not. And if you are the manager, it cannot be there only for eight hours of the working day. At least not if you are aiming for greatness.

I spent the first month after I graduated college cleaning hotel rooms 8 hours a day. Serving as a housekeeper, hotel guests generally spoke to me condescendingly, assumed I didn't speak English, or pretended I was invisible. I'll never forget the person who yelled, "Go get me a towel-o!" down the hall to me. It was a physically and mentally taxing component of the required job rotation in the hotel's management training program. I later transitioned to my permanent role as front desk manager, where I was able to interact with hotel guests in an entirely different capacity. I'm currently reading "Unreasonable Hospitality" by Will Guidara and it's got me reflecting on how my lessons learned working in the hospitality industry transformed how I approach my career in contract management - particularly when interacting with external and internal customers. Hospitality for Business Life Lessons: ⭐ Strive to be the best at whatever I do - whether it's making beds (...NDAs) or managing and delivering on the varying and often lofty expectations of hundreds of customers. 🔧 If I see a customer with a problem, fix it or find someone who can. Do not walk the other way or respond with indifference. 💩 Some people are going to treat me like crap, whether I am in the lowest-ranking position or in one of authority. This does not mean that I am crap. Maybe THEY are crap, or just having an awful day. Either way, don't become that person. 💡People on my team may be contributing much more to the organization's success behind the scenes than I know. Respect everyone. Know ALL of your team members, and know ALL of their contributions. 💪 A great job yesterday matters little to my customer today. Each day requires 100% effort. How can we help bring a hospitality-focused approach to business interactions in every workplace? And yes, I can still tuck a bed corner like nobody's business. #hospitality #excellence #everyday ...my opinions, AI-free.

A Resume Tip especially helpful for hoteliers or those aspiring to work in the hotel industry: If you've worked at different properties or restaurants, it helps to highlight or draw attention to some fast facts that can include: # of Rooms # square feet of meeting space # of restaurants on site (if a hotel or larger property) # of seats in restaurant (if a restaurant manager of a solo operation) $ volume of business I typically highlight the first two facts ( # of rooms & # of meeting space) under the name of the property. Example Fictional Hotel Position Title 700 rooms 40k sq ft meeting space (bullet points, highlight accomplishments, etc.) The goal is to give a hiring manager a quick snapshot of the areas you worked and scope you have experienced. If a hiring manager can easily see you've worked at properties where the room count is 300, 250, and 375 respectively, They will likely think one of three things "This candidate can handle a similar role in a 500 room hotel" "This candidate can take on an executive level role in a 200 room hotel" "This candidate can handle a promotion in a 350 room hotel" You are only given a few moments for someone to review your resume, help them help you!! #hospitality #hotels #hotelindustry #resumetips #jobseeksers

🌟 Ever wondered what it takes to land a job at a luxury hotel? Well, let’s just say it’s not really about your skills or experience... 😏 First off, let’s talk about your resume. Have you worked at a "normal" hotel? How quaint! But unfortunately, in the world of luxury, that’s like having fast food experience when you’re applying to be a Michelin-star chef. 🍔👨🍳 Did you manage a bustling team and keep your guests happy? That’s adorable, but we’re looking for someone who has mastered the art of adjusting the angle of a pillow just so. 🛏️✨ Next up, education. You might have a degree in Hospitality Management, but did you attend the top 0.01% of hospitality schools? 🎓 If your school doesn't have "prestige" dripping from its walls, well, we might have a lovely concierge position opening in about ten years. 😂 And let’s not forget the all-important pedigree. 🐶 If your family hasn’t been in the luxury hotel business for at least five generations, we’re afraid you just won’t fit in with our legacy staff. 👵👩👧👶👶 No family legacy? Tough break! We prefer our employees to have grown up discussing pillow menus over breakfast. 🥐 Then there's the experience. Have you spent years perfecting the art of guest satisfaction? That’s nice, but we’re really looking for someone who has catered to royalty, celebrities, and maybe a unicorn or two. 🦄👑 Your guests were satisfied? Our guests need to be enchanted, pampered, and treated as if they just descended from Mount Olympus. 🏛️✨ So, if you're thinking about applying to a luxury hotel, just remember: it's not about what you know, but who your ancestors were, where you learned how to fluff a pillow, and whether your last name sounds like it belongs in a yacht club registry. 🌊⚓ #LuxuryLife #EliteHiring #NormalHotelProblems #Sarcasm #HospitalityTruths #ExclusiveOnly
