As the holiday season approaches, many of us feel inspired to give back and support those in need. However, while the intention to donate is noble, it's essential to approach giving thoughtfully to ensure our contributions make a genuine impact and are handled safely. Confession: I like Giving Tuesday 🤯 I don't like it for the flood of posts and endless requests I receive, but because it's a day intentionally indicated to giving any kind or amount of personal resources to each other. ❓ Why should I give? We all have needs. Needing can be scary, especially when we spend each day trying to fulfill our own needs and those of our in-group. However, needing can also be exceptionally companionable when we realize it's what we all have in common. So, in my opinion, you should give something this Giving Tuesday because we all need something. ➕ Additionally, today most places have opportunities to match your donation! You can give the same amount on any other day, but today is the day it will make the most impact. ❓ What should I give? The simple answer is to examine what you have to give. You can give time by volunteering, you can give energy by learning about local causes, you can give items to in-kind donations, and, of course, you can always give money. Giving is an expression of empathy. I like Giving Tuesday because today, there is energy, time, and resources committed to compounding your expression of empathy, which is why today is the day to intentionally give.

I first came to Chicago Debates over four years looking for work that was personal. You see, deciding to join my high school's debate team has been one of the most impactful choices I have made thus far. Through debate I learned how to listen critically. Through debate I learned how to research and analyze sources. Through debate I learned how to have civil discussions. Through debate I learned how to advocate for myself. Through debate I traveled the country and met people from different background and perspectives. Through debate I found a community. One of our former board members used to say, "Debate isn't going to be for everyone, but everyone should have access to debate." That phrase has stuck in my mind ever since because it’s true. While not everyone may understand why a student wakes up early on a Saturday to argue for 8+ hours, the skills learned through this activity are so integral that no one should face barriers to accessing it. I know your feed is likely full of messages asking for support today. But this Giving Tuesday is especially critical for Chicago Debates. We began our season with news of significant funding cuts from the school district. Despite these challenges, we’ve reimagined our approach and have started the season strong, maintaining our programs with limited resources. As we approach the end of the year, we’re working to close funding gaps so we can start 2025 even stronger.
