Really enjoyed and resonated with this latest blog from Mark Smith from Northumbria. I like a bit of nuance and self-reflection. It’s easy it is for us to get tribal when we’re trying to change things for the better in a tough environment but it doesn’t always serve our purpose. Talk is important to energise and unite us, but it’s concrete action and honest learning that makes a difference. https://lnkd.in/ewRAFmeu

Should student panels be a regular occurrence at industry events? After some really positive feedback from Deenie's live student panel at Property Week Student Accommodation in this weeks' Housed episode the team discuss the importance of including students on conference agendas. The episode also covers: - Diversity and inclusion at events going in the right direction - Was Sarah mansplained to on stage? - Building Safety delays - The number of students choosing to stay living at home - Are property staff paid enough and is the head count enough to properly be on a par with hospitality? - Is AI going fast enough? - Mutually beneficial nominations contracts with student experience at the heart of the decision-making - The ensuite debate rolls on… - Why wasn’t The Renters Rights Bill discussed? - Should investors and operators have separate agendas at conferences? Coming Soon! Friend or Foe: The Authentic Self and Social Responsibility - An Existential Academy (EA) Conference. Keynote: Mick Cooper - From Therapy to Social Justice....... In the epoch of rampant consumerism and the ascendancy of self-centred cultures, we would like to introduce the yearly Existential Academy conference, "Friend or Foe: The Authentic Self and Social Responsibility." This conference arises as an imperative and crucial need for a dialogue on the complex interplay between the personal dimension and the evolving landscape of social and political engagement, set against the backdrop of heightened stakes in contemporary society. The conference will explore the challenges posed by a world dominated by a growing trend toward self-centred cultures and the tension it creates with an increase sense of social and political unease and will address the pressing issues at the intersection of personal development and social responsibility. 'Empty Chairs & Who's Not There' It was great to be back in Sunderland yesterday, chatting to people I haven't seen in a while still fighting, still standing and still banging the drum for holistic regeneration of places that they call home, with Arts, Culture & Communities at their core. The Insights North East Annual Conference #INEConference24 at the Fire Station opened with key notes from Kim McGuinness and Fiona Hill 'If you're proud to be a Northerner clap your hands' - both were inspirational and poignant placing the struggles of the North East at the centre of devolution as a potential nebulous for positive growth and change They spoke with one foot in the past and the other very much poised ready to leap hand in hand with the North East into its future They touched upon a subject close ro my heart, the need to constantly revisit, challenge and ponder who aren't yet in the conversation and what are the barriers to why this is still so. A theme that was echoed in the breakout session 'The Unseen policymakers: embedding community voices and remaking social infrastructure' [Panel: Kate Burrows Durham Community Action, Paula McCormack Save the Children, Liz Todd Newcastle University, Maeve Mimms Redhills CIO] which is very much my 'Empty Chairs & Who's Not There' element of my practice. It was interesting hearing from different perspectives on this - the question was raised again challenging reflection on the format and accessibility and intent of these events and ways in which conversations can be moved from talking to listening and what impact this may have in breaking the often cyclical rhetoric that prevents fast nimble responses to community issues and their escalation to policy makers to effect change in a tangible manner. Lots to unpack, reflect and learn from but I feel my biggest takeaway was ' How can we bridge the preconcieved chasm of difference between highly knowledgeable academics and those who would benefit from that knowledge to help them, put the kettle on and get stuff done' It was great to catch up with some old faces and make some new connections- as ever their never seems enough time to do this element justice as it can often be for me the most productive element of a conference. If you were there too I'd love to hear your thoughts, takeaways and reflections on the day.
