🌊 Welcome to Beacon Fisheries-KAUST! 🌊 At Beacon Fisheries-KAUST, we are committed to pioneering sustainable fisheries management through groundbreaking research and innovative solutions. Our collaboration with the NEOM Nature Reserve Sustainable Fisheries Program is a testament to our dedication to preserving marine biodiversity and ensuring the health of our oceans for generations to come. In 2023, we partnered with KBD to undertake a preliminary assessment of fish stocks, laying the foundation for an impactful Fisheries Management Plan. As we move into the 2024-2025 period, our focus intensifies with three ambitious projects: gathering detailed fisheries socio-economic data, conducting a comprehensive baseline assessment of megafauna—particularly sharks and rays, and evaluating commercial demersal fisheries. These initiatives are crucial for updating our Fisheries Management Plan and drafting a dedicated Shark and Ray Management Plan. Our ultimate goal is to provide actionable Policy Recommendations that will empower decision-makers to implement effective conservation and management measures. Join us on this journey to sustainable fisheries and marine conservation. Together, we can make a difference! #SustainableFisheries #MarineConservation #OceanHealth #SharkAndRayProtection #FisheriesManagement #letsconnect #letsgrowtogether

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) – a CIBBRiNA partner and advisor to the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) – has released new advice to help NEAFC adopt an #ecosystem approach to #fisheries management (EAFM – also known as the Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Approach, or EBFM). EAFM considers the entire #marine ecosystem, including ways that #fishing activities can affect different species and their habitats, not just commercially-targeted ones. ICES’ advice considers five different EAFM approaches, ranging from risk assessments to more data-heavy methods, that could align with a range of #biodiversity and ecosystem objectives for managing fisheries in the North-East #Atlantic – and in doing so support #bycatch mitigation. A key takeaway? Even if NEAFC focuses on just a few EAFM issues initially, significant positive change could still be achieved, ahead of expanding efforts to address EAFM in the North-East Atlantic fully. Facilitated a monitoring training for indigenous people (MHA) in Wakatobi which was opened directly by the head of the Wakatobi Marine and Fisheries Service. This training aims to provide capacity building to indigenous peoples in Wakatobi in conducting surveillance and monitoring of resources to support sustainable fisheries management. With this training, it is expected that indigenous peoples in Wakatobi can play an effective role in maintaining the sustainability of fisheries resources and can preserve local traditions and wisdom that have existed for centuries. #capacitybuilding #MHAWakatobi

Formulation of the National Development Plan (NDP6) Chapter: Fisheries, Living Aquatic Resources & Aquaculture From 14 to 18 October 2024, The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and it’s stakeholders will be engaging in an important chapter of the NDP6 that focuses on Fisheries, Living Aquatic Resources and Aquaculture. This comprehensive chapter will outline the strategies and goals to sustainably develop and manage our valuable aquatic ecosystems, enhancing food security, economic growth, and environmental stewardship. The Implementation Plan (IP) is designed to translate these goals into actionable steps, ensuring that we balance resource use and conservation for future generations. Through collaboration with stakeholders, experts, and the community, we aim to foster innovation in aquaculture, improve the management of fisheries, and address challenges like climate change and overfishing. #SustainableDevelopment #Fisheries #Aquaculture #NDP6 #BlueEconomy #DevelopmentPlan #Innovation
