McLaren appointed for £60m Fosters development in London’s West End. McLaren Construction has been appointed to build the £60m first phase of a Foster & Partners-designed development on the corner of New Bond Street and Grafton Street in London’s West End. The 5,400 sq m retail and office development for O&H Properties includes lower ground, ground and first-floor retail space, five storeys of office and event space above, and a complex three-storey basement. The design for the Mayfair Conservation Area includes a precast concrete and brick facade with curved triple-glazed bay windows and a zinc shingle roof. McLaren’s top-down construction programme will cast the central section of the ground floor slab to enable the cores to be built at the same time as excavating down and casting the basement floor slabs and liner walls. Extensive temporary works include 33m deep 1.2m diameter piles and 15m steel plunge columns to support the cores and ground floor slab, allowing the basement box and jump forming of cores to happen simultaneously. Subcontractors on the project include McGee for the groundwork, civils and concrete for the basement box; BHC for the steel frame; Techrete for the precast facade; Seele for the glazing; and All Metal Roofing for the roof. Here's an interesting historic event we'd thought could enlighten steel erectors professionals about the A325 Bolts history. 👨💻 ---- THE BATTLE OF THE BOLTS: A Skyscraper Fiasco in Pittsburgh In the 1960s, Pittsburgh was on a mission to modernize its skyline. One of the projects was the U.S. Steel Tower, which would eventually become the tallest building in the city, standing at 841 feet tall. This behemoth was made of Corten steel, famous for its strength and ability to rust intentionally to form a protective layer. A crucial part of constructing this skyscraper was the use of A325 structural bolts, which were relatively new on the market at the time. These high-strength bolts were developed to ensure the stability of major steel structures, replacing the old-fashioned rivets used in previous buildings. However, as with all innovations, they came with some teething problems. Here’s where it gets funny: during the construction of the U.S. Steel Tower, some of the bolts started mysteriously popping out of place, like champagne corks! Workers and engineers on-site would hear sudden, alarming pings as bolts shot across the construction site. It was a terrifying, yet somewhat comical sight—imagine trying to build a skyscraper while bolts are ricocheting around like stray bullets. The problem was traced back to how the bolts were being tightened. A325 bolts require a specific amount of tension to hold firm. However, due to a miscalculation with the tools used to install them, many of the bolts were over-tightened, causing the threads to strip. Under pressure, they would suddenly snap, flying off the building. After a thorough investigation, the engineers recalibrated their tightening process, ensuring that each bolt was torqued correctly. The fiasco eventually became known as “The Battle of the Bolts” among the construction workers, who never forgot those rogue bolts. Despite this early setback, the U.S. Steel Tower was completed in 1970 and still stands today, a testament to the durability of modern construction techniques (and, of course, the correct use of A325 bolts). The once-flying bolts are now securely holding the structure in place, no longer launching themselves into the Pittsburgh sky!

🏗️ New Butler® Building Under Construction! Marmon-Herrington will soon have a 6,200 sq. ft. addition to its current 32,000 sq. ft. building. The Butler addition will provide five truck mechanic bays for retrofitting military vehicles to all-wheel terrain trucks. This new garage will feature two 5-ton bridge cranes spanning across all five bays. The garage will be heated and lighted, with plenty of ventilation. The roof will be a Butler MR-24® standing machine seamed roof system with R-30 insulation. The walls will be 2.5″ Thermo wall insulated metal panels. We'll also add some specific exterior architectural features to meet the Eastpoint Business Center Park requirements.
