Ross McEwan calls for Boards to 'push back and simplify' in this month's Australian Institute of Company Directors Company Director magazine. He offers his insight into how boards should lean into strategy and execution by breaking things into 'what's essential'. His messages of 'consistency counts' and 'remember why you are there' (to serve shareholders) resonate. In his article he notes the plethora of items that the board is involved in, not just the challenge of running and growing the business, but also ESG, compliance, regulatory reporting, modern slavery and the 'cumulative impact on board effectiveness'. In my view if businesses are trying to drive and control execution without a strategy platform they will underperform, as it is too hard to focus on the whirlwind of issues these days, and the business' Most Important Goals and strategic initiatives, and there are too many distractions to properly focus on 'where do we make our money' as McEwan puts it.
