In my experience, succession planning is often treated as a task to check off; a safety net for when key leaders leave. But I’ve seen that real succession planning goes far beyond filling positions. It’s about: ↳ Preparing people, ↳ Aligning cultures, and ↳ Building a future-proof framework. Here’s what I’ve observed: → A strong plan isn’t just about choosing “WHO” will lead next. → It’s about defining the “HOW” & “WHY” to ensure long-term success. Yet, many organizations including 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 (𝗙𝗠𝗕𝘀), fall into the same traps, leaving them unprepared when change strikes. Here are some common pitfalls I’ve seen derail succession planning: → Focusing solely on roles and ignoring development. → Overlooking cultural alignment and soft skills. → Assuming current leaders will stay indefinitely. → Neglecting to prepare for external changes or disruptions. → Treating succession planning as a document rather than a strategy. For 𝗙𝗠𝗕𝘀, these challenges can feel even more complex. Balancing legacy with innovation requires a structured, thoughtful approach that goes beyond surface-level planning.
