Interesting to see Sarah Russell and her team introduce Bellwether, a project by X, the moonshot factory. Bellwether is defined by X as “The first prediction engine for the Earth and everything on it”. As we are all flooded by AI news and noise it’s important that we keep focus on the most important problems we need to solve with technology and climate change is at the top of our priorities. Bellwether is another validation point for me that AI and climate are going to be big and important. And I predict a wave of founders combining the two. Bellwether is exploring how AI models can help us leverage physical world 🌎 data and help predict things about it. With climate change accelerated, the changes to the physical world are more extreme in their amplitude and frequency and it’s important to be able to react to those changes from wildfires, to extreme weather. Their technology uses geospatial data and advanced simulations to come up with new insights about nature and the built environment. They analyse petabytes of historical data about the environment in combination with thousands of risk drivers like tree species, wind qualities, and types of infrastructure. They claim to have a five year prediction which will help public and private sectors to derisk and react. We see this clearly with investors and insurance companies that wish to avoid risk and bring as much certainty as they can in a world where geopolitical risks, pandemics and other changes influence markets and supply chains.
