Kenny Shui, Vice President cum Co-Head of Public Policy Institute, 團結香港基金 Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF), and Debbie Chan, Assistant Researcher, OHKF, wrote a commentary in 香港01 on how to promote the development of water sports in Hong Kong by making good use of the resources, so as to revive the glorious achievement of Hong Kong's representative, Lee Lai Shan, who won the gold medal in water sports at the Olympic Games nearly 30 years ago. According to Kenny and Debbie, in recent years, the government has been vigorously promoting the development of sports programmes in 3 directions, including popularization, elitism, and mega events. The two cited the example of Nicholas Halliday. He is an athlete for the Team Hong Kong, China in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, who is anticipated to be the best sailor in Asia in the sailing match. This demonstrated that Hong Kong's aquatic athletes are capable of achieving great results. They advised Hong Kong to capitalize on its geographical advantage of the sea and allocate more resources to the development of water sports. Based on the planning of the waterfront promenade along the Charles River Esplanade in Boston, the government is recommended to build more water sports facilities in various districts, on a scale comparable to that of the Kai Tak Water Sports Center, so as to nurture water sports talents and develop the local sports industry. The facilities may even be conducive to the all-round development of diversified tourism experiences in Hong Kong. Read the Article: https://bit.ly/4bP3cq2

Great breakfast meeting with sir Peter Gluckman A few pointers that I can relate with: 💸 in New Zealand only in the last 10-15 years we started seeing R&D as investment rather than a cost and we need to get even better at that 🚧 there's a lot of barriers that need to be removed for science and innovation industry and we need to act now to avoid staying behind the world 🌎 we need to learn from other countries and better invest public money in research that can be commercially successful 🤝 we need a set of rules and collaborative agreements between CRIs, universities and researchers to simplify understanding of IPs generated by research and reduce the time and effort for businesses collaborating with researchers Great meeting, a lot of feedback and most importantly the light in a tunnel in the future of science in New Zealand.
