Standard operating procedure when banks need to cut costs fast. Layoffs, the global kind. Happened at Standard Chartered in 2015 when the group posted a $1.8bn loss on account of regulatory fines issued for illicit dollar denominated transactions with sanctioned countries. It was the first time Standard Chartered made a loss in 27 years at the time. The share price tumbled from all time highs of GBP17 in prior years to around GBP4. 75% loss in shareholder value. The shareholders cleaned out the board and found Bill Winters. No surprises he started with headcount cutting 10,000 jobs. At the time Standard Chartered employed around 90,000. Now after nearly another 10 years Bill Winters has succeeded in reshaping the bank, bringing it back to profitability and giving cash back to shareholders in share buybacks.

Lord of the flies! "HSBC managers are competing to keep their jobs in CEO’s revamp". Appropriate in the week of the launch of the new "Gladiator" that HSBC are effectively doing the same thing in a fight for survival. Though why anyone would want to work there is beyond me! I am so glad that I'm an entrepreneur away from these mindless and destructive shenanigans. "HSBC Holdings has asked hundreds of managers to reapply for jobs in the firm’s newly formed corporate and institutional banking (CIB) division, as CEO Georges Elhedery continues his hunt for ways to make the bank run more efficiently. Interviews are already underway, according to people familiar with the matter, essentially pitting senior staff who came from the commercial banking division against those from the global banking and markets unit to compete for the jobs available in the combined CIB division. The process will result in the British bank beginning to dismiss several hundred managing directors and other senior bankers in the coming weeks, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private deliberations. As part of the shake-up, HSBC will phase out its use of the general manager titles that it gives to some of its most senior staff and will instead give those employees managing director titles, a common rank at many major financial services businesses, the people added." Reapplying for your own job?! HSBC's latest move to cut costs by forcing hundreds of senior managers to compete for their positions might be the boldest - or most reckless - decision in its 159-year history. On one hand, it signals decisive action from leadership under Georges Elhedery to simplify and realign the bank's sprawling operations. But let’s not ignore the elephant in the room: this is happening while HSBC boasts a *$8.5bn quarterly profit*. 🤔 Here’s what’s really at stake: ✅ Innovation vs. Attrition: How do you inspire innovation if your top talent is busy safeguarding their jobs? ✅ Short-Term Fix or Strategic Shift? Cutting costs in response to a slowing Chinese economy may be prudent, but is banking *more layoffs* on Asia the best bet? ✅ Trust Matters: Employees and investors alike may question if this chaos is truly about efficiency - or masking deeper cracks in the foundation. The financial world has seen its fair share of layoffs, but forcing your executives to battle for survival in a Hunger Games-style process? That’s a new one. 🏹 Does this signify the bold restructuring legacy institutions need - or the dangerous overreach of a company caught between conflicting priorities? #Leadership #HSBC #Innovation #JobCuts #Finance
