The new policy cycle at the end of 2024 is a pivotal opportunity to ask ourselves: - Are we taking the right approach towards decarbonising the built environment? - Are we making the link between buildings and EU prosperity, resilience, and equity? - And are we effectively harnessing the abundance of opportunities that renovating buildings offers – for our societies, our security, and our environment? That fact is that better buildings can be the answer to so many of the challenges we are facing today, and can help us achieve our common goals. We just need the right strategic approach. 📌 Our 10 Policy Priorities: 1. Successful implementation of the EPBD – design policy with impact and goals. 2. Boost Europe's industrial competitiveness and innovation with sustainable construction. 3. Optimise the institutional setup to further improve coordination and better grasp new challenges and opportunities. 4. Accelerate financial flows towards future-proof buildings. 5. Improve data availability, transparency, and quality through digitalisation. 6. Enhance energy security and resilience by combining energy efficiency and renewables in a smart energy system. 7. Future-proof clean, circular, sustainable buildings and construction sector. 8. Design policies with and for people to strengthen Europe’s social fabric. 9. Confront reality: adapt the built environment to be climate-resilient. 10. Elevate the EU’s experience into a “green buildings diplomacy” for enhanced energy security. Buildings are for people, and that's why the initiatives and decisions by the EU in the next 5 years must deliver the best buildings possible, for people and the planet. We have a few suggestions how this can happen. Have a read!

The construction industry accounts for approx. 30-40% of carbon emissions globally. Buildings are being designed to consume less energy and offer healthier environments to their inhabitants but the materials and processes used to construct them are often antiquated and contribute greatly to GHG emissions. It's not an easy problem to solve because it requires buy-in from the entire supply chain from design through construction. C40 Cities has published a new report and developed a new tool that allows owners and operators of buildings to quantify how retrofits can reduce emissions while improving occupiers' health and productivity. Buildings account for a third of GHG emissions in C40 cities, but that figure increases to 70% for many cities in the Global North. Our latest work showcases measures that reduce that carbon impact while boosting well-being. We spend 90% of our time indoors, which means that the state of our buildings has a major impact on our physical and mental health. Renovations of the existing building stock remain a challenge (duh!). One way to make a stronger case for policy and projects is to tap into the multiple benefits that retrofits can deliver: reducing energy/carbon, costs, and improving indoor environments for people. If you work with these topics, especially in the context of cities make sure to take a look at this latest work from C40 Cities and VELUX. The summary report (for the lingo, data, cases, etc.) and the two accompanying tools (vulnerability mapping and benefits of retrofits) can give you a great start into retrofit strategy 🏚 🌍 ⚡
