Let me show you the polymer fractionation of polyvinyl butyral (#PVB): PVB is amongst others used as a hot melt adhesive in the form of intermediate films for laminated safety glass. It can be regained mechanically e.g. from broken car safety glasses. On the left of the picture you can see recycled PVB dissolved in ethanol as turbid solution. In this quality it can no longer be used as hot melt adhesive for safety glasses. Centrifugation can remove a hugh amount of solid impurities (see 2nd photo), but also this purified material still produces turbid solutions (see 3rd photo). With the help of polymer fractionation all impurities, which are responsible for the turbity and therefore for the low quality of the material, can be removed.
