Do you need to put your exiting employee on garden leave? Garden leave can be a protective measure when a valuable employee is leaving your organisation and you want minimal disruption to your business operations. During this time, they’re asked not to return to work but continue to receive pay and benefits. Think of it as temporarily pausing an employee's access to sensitive and strategic information to mitigate any risks during the transition period. Garden leave isn’t always contentious; sometimes employees leave on good terms and agree to use a portion of their notice period as garden leave, facilitating a smooth exit 🙂 However, garden leave comes at a cost and with potential risks for the employer - so it’s important to tread carefully. UAE: During the extended summer vacation, what do school bus drivers do? In the UAE, the safety of students and the welfare of school bus drivers are equally prioritized. Like other workers, school bus drivers are entitled to annual leave, national holidays, and overtime pay if they work on public holidays. While students enjoy a long summer break, drivers employed by transportation companies also get the opportunity to unwind, with many taking at least 30 days off each year. Steve Burnell, managing director of School Transport Services (STS), emphasizes that drivers at his company are employed full-time, receiving a 12-month salary and annual flight allowances. “We encourage our drivers to go home annually to rest and recuperate,” says Burnell, adding that short breaks also allow for necessary training. However, not all drivers take time off. Some take on seasonal work, driving for summer camps or public transport, while others use the time to relax and visit family. Drivers working for companies like STS also face logistical challenges, as vacations must be staggered to maintain operations during the summer months. When drivers return from leave, they undergo professional development, including safety training, to stay up-to-date with regulations. They are also trained in safeguarding protocols to ensure professional conduct around students. This includes clear guidelines on physical interaction, ensuring any contact is appropriate and for the safety of the child. Burnell highlights the importance of having "Bus Guardians" to assist drivers. These trained professionals help students with boarding, ensure seat belts are fastened, and ensure the safe handover of students to designated adults, further enhancing the safety and well-being of students in transit. Morena proposes to add three holidays for workers In the Deputy Chamber, there are three initiatives that aim to extend the holidays for workers. “ “Chamber of Deputies should analyze a proposal to increase the days off for workers in the private sector. The initiative presented this week seeks to incorporate into the Federal Labor Law (LFT) three new holiday dates for people employed in the Private Initiative. …. It proposes to add to the LFT the first Monday of May (in commemoration of the Battle of Puebla on May 5), and on November 1 and 2 for the festivities of the Day of the Dead. With this proposal, in the Lower House three initiatives are added that aim to extend the holidays for workers, which include December 12, Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, and one more that seeks to recognize November 2 as mandatory rest. "It is important to note that, despite the reform of the Federal Labor Law, to article 78, in which Mexico doubled its number of 12-day vacations, continues to be placed in the last places of the OECD in paid annual leave and official holidays," says the deputy. Currently, Mexico recognizes nine days of mandatory rest for workers, of which two of them are only enjoyed when there are elections or by the transmission of the Federal Executive Branch. And the holidays? Mandatory rest dates are not counted as holidays for workers; that is, they are additional to the vacation period to which they are entitled according to their years of service.
