GMP Architekten has made waves with their recent revamp of the iconic Alsterschwimmhalle in Hamburg, a project that not only reinforces the structure's historical significance but also redefines its role in the community. This swimming pool, affectionately known as the "Swimming Opera," has been transformed into a multipurpose leisure complex featuring a sauna and fitness club, ensuring its relevance in today's world while celebrating its unique double-curved concrete roof. Reflecting on similar projects, I am constantly reminded of the delicate balance between preserving architectural heritage and adapting to modern needs. As architects, we often face the challenge of maintaining the essence of a building while infusing it with new life. Have you encountered a project where this balance was tested? What strategies did you employ? The Alsterschwimmhalle's renovation highlights the importance of enhancing accessibility and environmental efficiency in public spaces. With the updated infrastructure, community members can enjoy improved facilities that cater to a wider audience. The integration of salvaged materials also exemplifies sustainable design practices in action. 🌿 It’s exciting to see how innovative thinking and respect for history can merge to create spaces that not only serve their functional purpose but also resonate with the community. What are your thoughts on the direction of modern architectural renovations? Let’s discuss! #rendimension #hugoramirezarchitect #renderings #vrtraining For more information, visit our website at www.rendimension.com. A landmark installation of the 2024 London Design Festival, Vert was a 10m tall modular timber pavilion made of 80% renewable materials and designed for re-use. Here’s a fantastic timelapse of the project, with thanks to AHEC. This was a pioneering collaboration between AHEC (American Hardwood Export Council), urban greening specialists OMCC (Office for Micro-Climate Cultivation), and industrial design practice Diez Office. Stage One was approached by AHEC to assist with realising their vision. The plants were pre-grown at Stage One, and we manufactured the steel base plate for the decking and plate fixings for the structure, as well as machining timber bench headers and footrests to suspend the net seating. We completed the installation in a week, watch it here 👇

✨ Zumtobel Group 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗿𝗲-𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀: Five years after the devastating fire, the famous Parisian cathedral was recently reopened with a grand ceremony - and Austrian technology illuminating its interior. The lighting for the vaulted ceilings of the nave and transept was provided by Zumtobel subsidiary Thorn Lighting. Renowned international lighting designer Patrick Rimoux chose the expertise of the globally operating company headquartered in Dornbirn, Vorarlberg. According to Zumtobel CEO Alfred Felder, this has been one of the most significant assignments of recent years. A unique challenge for this project: the drill had to stay in the toolbox due to the building's protected heritage status. Overall Trophy Winner: Award of Excellence: Specialised Restoration and Repurposing Reimagining the Planetarium as the Wits Anglo-American Digital Dome Kate Otten Architects The new Wits Snglo-American Digital Dome represents an outstanding example of architectural innovation and respect for heritage, seamlessly blending the old Wits Planetarium with a newly constructed addition to create a vibrant, multifunctional space. Reimagining the iconic domed structure into a state-of-the-art digital dome brings the building into the 21st century, transforming it into a modern teaching, research, and public venue while preserving the essence of the original. The finishes throughout the project are of the highest standard, setting a benchmark for craftsmanship and attention to detail. The challenge of merging two distinct functions—academic and sports—was handled with remarkable skill. The new extension adds essential office and working spaces and enhances the building's sports viewing deck and soccer centre role. These spaces are thoughtfully integrated, serving the diverse needs of the University while maintaining a coherent architectural language. The design prioritises accessibility, improves school tours and public visitors' flow, and creates a welcoming environment. This project is a masterful example of the sensitive melding of old and new, with the conservation of the original Planetarium structure expertly enhanced by the new additions. It is an outstanding 're-invention' that serves as a model for future adaptive reuse, making it a deserving recipient of the Herbert Prins Colosseum Trophy. #gifa #colosseumawards2024 #architecture #heritage
