𝗥𝗵-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁𝘀: 𝗔𝗻 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗢𝗙𝗖 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀   Over the last few decades, fuel cells were given an increasingly important role for a future sustainable energy supply, due to their high energy efficiency and possibility to use renewable fuels. Among various types of fuel cells, the solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are gaining significant interest due to high energy efficiency and low exhaust emissions, particularly in stationary and constant load operation. SOFCs can work with a variety of fuels e.g., hydrogen, carbon monoxide, ammonia, methane, methanol, higher hydrocarbons and its combinations. For the SOFC stack to efficiently operate a pre-treatment of these fuels is key. The most interesting fuel for SOFC systems used for stationary applications in the near, to mid-term, surely is natural gas - consisting mainly of methane but containing higher hydrocarbons as well. Pre-reformers play an important role in removing these and so protect the downstream components from coking.   During the poster session at the #FC3 Fuel Cell Conference Chemnitz 2024, organized by HZwo, my colleague Pragati Joshi had the opportunity to present our latest catalyst developments for pre-reforming reactions for the SOFC system. These developments were done by Heraeus Precious Metals in cooperation with Hulteberg Chemistry & Engineering AB. 👩🔬 👨🔬   The focus of the present work shows the performance of a Rh-based catalyst for prereformer applications under different gas compositions with 10,000 h-1 space velocity. The operation is near isothermal, but at higher temperatures, the endothermic heat load of the methane conversion lowers the outlet temperature.   You can download the poster for more details from the following link: https://lnkd.in/ec2uTk5M 💬 If you are interested in further information, please reach out to me.

Cool poster Pragati Joshi and Ingo Gräf! I find it always very interesting in wich high variety of processes precious metals can help. I knew we are doing “something” around SOFC but now I understand much better what the previous metals do!

Thank you for sharing, Ingo! I'm convinced the potential of the SOFC is often overlooked
