We are happy that Sweden and the UK have launched an innovative, first-of-its-kind collaboration to advance the fields of neuroarchitecture and neurodesign. This initiative, forged between University College London (UCL) and the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), aims to deepen our understanding of how neuroscience can inform the design of built environments. By exploring how the brain interacts with its surroundings, the collaboration seeks to create spaces that promote health, well-being, and sustainability. A central focus of the partnership is PEARL (Person-Environment-Activity Research Laboratory), a cutting-edge facility at UCL. PEARL specializes in studying how people perceive and interact with their environments. It combines real-world simulations with neuroscientific insights to guide the design of spaces that meet human needs in diverse and inclusive ways. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in applying scientific research to architecture and urban planning, highlighting the role of conscious design in improving quality of life. 🌍 🧠 Last week the international center for NeuroArchitecture and NeuroDesign was launched at the Swedish Ambassador's Residence in London. RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and UCL University College London, have jointly created an inclusive platform combining brain sciences, innovative technology, architecture, and design with the purpose of reshaping the environments we live in, to improve aspects of wellbeing and health. Inspired by the UK-Sweden Strategic Partnership, the center will work across industry partners, academic researchers, and policymakers to collaborate and innovate urban development. Many of the societal and sustainability challenges that society faces today call for more multidisciplinary research. Since its foundation, the KTH Live-In Lab has been good at bridging industry and academia, with researchers developing scalable solutions in collaboration with societal stakeholders. "I have been a researcher at the Kungliga Tekniska högskolan Department of Energy Technology since 2017, and I worked on the conceptualization and operation of the KTH Live-In Lab", says Marco Molinari, now taking over after long-term Director Jonas Anund Vogel, to continue the centre's development with the three co-directors. "To keep KTH Live-In Lab growing in state-of-the-art research and societal impact, we need three medium-term actions." He states: "First, we need to increase the number and types of building testbeds: office spaces and neighbourhoods are examples of new enabling experimental setups. Then we have the potential to further diversify research; we spend the majority of our time indoors, and living labs can be excellent experimental setups for monitoring residents’ health and to carry out more research in sociology, psychology and innovation business models," he says and continues, "last but not least, the network of the Live-In Lab has an important expansion potential, creating synergies with KTH’s laboratories and centres and forming durable international partnerships with new building living labs in Europe." #Sustainability #MultidisciplinaryResearch #LiveInLab

Positioning ANAT as a trusted leader in promoting interdisciplinary research and creative experimentation, we supported 9 extraordinary experimental collaborations between artists and academic research throughout Australia. These partnerships created opportunities for students and academics alike, encouraging new generations of artists, scientists, and technologists to collaborate on future-focused projects, shaping the next wave of innovation, experimentation. Happy to announce I have been accepted to present my research at the EU S+T+ARTS Symposium where I will discuss the SciArt project at the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, and the crucial forms of impact and innovation this project supports - particularly those which go beyond economic value. This research contributes to the more holistic assessment of impacts generated by transdisciplinary collaborations for improved integration of art and science when exploring complex societal problems. Today, numerous publications, institutions, organisations, academic associations, and funding programmes, such as S+T+ARTS in the European context, testify to the burgeoning emphasis on transdisciplinarity. However, amidst this progress, persistent questions and concerns remain, particularly with regard to the dissemination and impact assessment of projects within these transdisciplinary fields. A key challenge is to develop effective methods for observing, monitoring, evaluating, and identifying key variables illuminating project findings and respecting their inherent complexity. This symposium addresses these needs by convening an international dialogue that spans academic discourse and practical applications. By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, we aim to explore new strategies for accurately addressing, monitoring, and measuring the multiple impacts of projects situated at the intersection of the arts, technologies, and sciences, within the global challenges of contemporary society.
