It is that time of year again when people struggle so much more than needed. I am already seeing people comment on social media about struggling for Christmas gifts for their children. Not everyone can save money on their bills due to high levels of arrears with current companies so it is just exacerbates people financial problems. I do offer help with arrears for people to help them switch to alternative provider (mainly UW) but with my FB group, Browns Bargain Basement, a proportion of everyday sales goes into a pot to help fund toys and gifts for children in need. This year is no different in what I am doing, but what has changed is the demand of people requesting help. Therefore, I have set up a go fund me to help distribute gifts to people in need this year. I only aim for £500, but this can help at least 20 families with items to give their children this Christmas (or birthday). Can you help me put more smiles on Children's faces this year? https://lnkd.in/ewx7CN2j

Collective action can lead to change. We’ve seen proof of it right here at FIRST UNITED. Just last week, the government announced proposed amendments to the Residential Tenancy Act—addressing many of the issues and some of the suggested solutions outlined in our law reform platform. We consider this a win, not just for FIRST but for the one million people who rent homes across BC! But this couldn’t have been done without the hundreds of people who shared their eviction stories for our BC Eviction Mapping research. Or the hundreds of people who signed our petition to the Housing Minister. Or the donors who made this work possible. A small action by multiple individuals can make a great impact! Will you be part of making a change? Join us and hundreds of others by making a gift to support our life-saving programs this April. Give today at https://lnkd.in/g2-tN8ZB. We need to raise $50,000 by April 25 for our life-saving programs. Will you help us reach our goal? Click the link to see our progress. #DTES #CollectiveAction #BCEvictionMap

The Federal Reserve Beige Book summaries insights about conditions affecting low- and moderate-income communities from multiple perspectives. The “Community Conditions” and “Community Perspectives” sections provide insight into local changes through interviews with nonprofit and community leaders and workforce professionals serving lower-income people, underscoring the value and opportunities for public-private partnerships and cross-sectoral approaches to fostering economic well being.
"Demand for community and support services rose somewhat as individuals and households continued to seek housing, medical, and food assistance. Closures of childcare facilities and recent heat waves in some regions led to higher demand for related support services. Nonprofit organizations faced more difficulties securing funds despite a slight increase in contributions from government sources. Small businesses continued to face challenges with access to credit and sluggish demand in urban cores, forcing some of them to close. One Washington contact noted a rise in demand for educational and training services such as credential and certificate programs,” notes the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco in their Community Conditions section of the most recent Beige Book. Find out what other nonprofit and community leaders, and workforce professionals serving lower-income people shared with the Federal Reserve for the August 2024 Beige Book. #BeigeBook #CommunityDevelopment #LMI https://bit.ly/4gbD3oT

At North Paddington Foodbank, we believe that dignity should be at the heart of any aid effort. Our cash-first model isn’t just about providing financial assistance - it’s about empowering families to make decisions that are right for them. 🎯 Meet Emily, a local resident who reached out to NFPB for help when her husband left, making her a single mother to three children in addition to being a carer to her elderly parents. 🛒 By offering cash-first support, we give people like Emily the freedom to budget, plan, and make decisions that best meet their specific needs. 💬 It’s more than food—it’s about giving people the power of choice. This is what makes North Paddington Foodbank different, and we’re proud to be a part of a movement that restores dignity to food aid. 👉 Help us continue empowering families like Emily with the freedom to choose. Your donations make this possible. #DignityInAid #CashFirstCharity #FoodAidInnovation #EmpowermentThroughChoice #NorthPaddingtonFoodbank #ImpactStories

As the IRS scrutinizes many of the reporting habits of nonprofit hospitals, broader questions in the nonprofit space begin to emerge around reporting. When is an organization exempt from certain reporting environments? Where do we draw the line for an organization's contributions to the community? When standards are lax, many organizations lose the motivation to further reinvest in the wellbeing and public health of those they have a responsibility to serve. I hope nonprofit leaders everywhere can learn valuable lessons from this. Thanks Bloomberg. #Nonprofit #Justice #TaxReporting

Tax-exempt organizations enjoy favorable federal tax status, but they must guard it by following tax law and IRS regulations. If a group loses tax-exempt status, its income may be subject to federal tax and it can no longer receive tax-deductible donations. Organizations that fail to file Form 990 for three consecutive years may face automatic revocation. Recently, the IRS sent revocation Letter Rulings to groups that didn’t serve the public interest. One group operated for the primary purpose of providing non-exempt recreation to its members (LTR 202403013). Another was limited to the activities of a family reunion (LTR 202403016) and another sold services to the public (LTR 202403014).
