What a commandable step by NSF! 1. NSF wants the professor to submit a mentoring plan for Ph.D. students. 2. Once funded by NSF, A PI is required to certify that Ph.D.s and postdocs have active individual development plans (IDP). This plan is part of funding evaluation, not just a document to submit! National Science Foundation (NSF) is one of the major science funding agencies in the US. “Future STEM talent is a valuable national resource, and we cannot squander the opportunity to prepare that talent to persist in STEM,” - Sylvia Butterfield (deputy assistant director for NSF’s Directorate for STEM Education) Link to articles: https://lnkd.in/dFXJ9SD8 #research #education #phds #postdocs #funding #nsf

Is this one of the best packages a PhD program can offer in 2024❓ I am happy to see more programs step up to provide this level of support A mentee received a very generous offer, including a $45K stipend, full tuition coverage, and additional benefits. This level of support acknowledges the value of their academic contributions and ensures they can focus on their research without the burden of financial stress. Livable stipends are essential for allowing PhD students to thrive academically and personally. Programs that invest in their students by providing comprehensive funding packages enable scholars to reach their full potential. Kudos to the University of Chicago. I advocate for all PhD programs to prioritize and increase funding for their students. Programs should ensure that financial barriers do not hinder the pursuit of knowledge and innovation. In 2020, I received two PhD offers without funding. Of course, I rejected both! If you have a PhD offer without funding, will you accept it❓ Why do you think PhD programs offer admissions with no realistic mechanism for students to pay their tuition or living expenses ❓ How much stipend do you think is enough for a PhD program❓ #PhD #Funding #Research #HigherEducation #GraduateSchool

The notable people in our #PhDprogramme should remind us of the need for continued academic growth regardless of the fact that we have attained a higher position in society. Continued learning and research helps us to increase our relevance in the areas of our engagements. Higher positions in society must motivate us to learn and research more. Let these notable figures in our PhD programme inspire us to do more. #ContinuousProfessionalDevelopment #AdultLearning #ResearchAndRelevance #PostgraduateResearch #HigherEducation #DepartmentOfTheologyAndReligiousStudies @MzuniOnline

👍 Providing undergraduate research experiences has been a win-win in computational social science and responsible data science since I arrived at Pitt. This is a great guide to systematically increasing opportunities for practical and valuable skills for all students. Responsible Data Science@Pitt
Featured in Inside Higher Ed, Brett Say and Caitlin Pingree, Office of the Provost, outline three major ways universities can help scale traditional faculty/student models of undergraduate research engagement. They discuss how research peer mentoring, group-based programs and community engaged research can help advance the institutional effectiveness of undergraduate research. https://lnkd.in/eHHau2eE

Seven Swiss universities, coordinated by EPFL and Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich, have formed the DEEP Consortium (Digital Education for Equity in Primary schools) to explore the impact of the digital transformation for school education and investigate how to ensure an equitable and effective digitalization of Swiss primary schools. The innovative configuration of the consortium brings together universities (Université de Genève, University of Lausanne), teacher training universities (Pädagogische Hochschule Zürich, Fhnw - Pädagogische Hochschule, Pädagogische Hochschule St.Gallen, Pädagogische Hochschule Schwyz) as well as EPFL as federal institute of technology, thereby creating a community of diverse disciplines, expertise and methodological approaches. Seven projects address various aspects of learning environments and their digital components, both teacher and learner perspectives, as well as diverse learning outcomes. The DEEP consortium is supported by the Jacobs Foundation and is part of their initiative Education in Digitality, in which the consortium collaborates with the project Opportunité numérique - Chance Digitalität and proEdu - Bringen wir Schule gemeinsam weiter! in order to inform actors in educational practice and administration. In today's academic landscape, the focus on publications often overshadows the true essence of PhD research. As Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, Chair of UGC and AICTE, aptly points out, "We need to encourage scholars to become inquisitive explorers, papers will naturally follow." By prioritizing PhD quality over quantity, we can foster a more innovative and impactful research ecosystem. It's essential to shift our focus towards nurturing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a passion for knowledge. Let's strive for a future where PhDs are recognized for their intellectual depth and contributions to their respective fields, rather than solely by the number of papers published. #PhD #AcademicResearch #HigherEducation #ResearchQuality #Innovation #ScholarlyPursuits #Knowledge #Learning #AcademicLife #Education #Research #University #GraduateSchool #Academia #PhDLife #PhDStudent #PhDThesis #ResearchGate #AcademiaTwitter #AcademicChat #AcademicCommunity #EducationReform #HigherEducationReform #ResearchGate #AcademiaTwitter #AcademicChat #AcademicCommunity

To foster diversity in #STEM graduate education, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation introduces grants of up to $500,000 for U.S. institutions. This initiative aims to create equitable pathways from Minority-Serving Institutions to advanced STEM programs, nurturing a more diverse scientific community. Deadline for proposals: July 1, 2024. Apply here: https://lnkd.in/gfivW2kn Grantees awarded via this initiative will engage the expertise of MSIs—and the unique experiences of their faculty and students—to model effective systems and practices that remove barriers and create opportunities for equitable learning environments in STEM graduate education so all students can thrive. Grant awards will support sharing MSIs’ institutional know-how on equitable undergraduate and graduate education, as well as modeling that know-how to create systemic changes that enhance pathways from MSIs to master’s and doctoral degree programs in #astronomy, #biology, #chemistry, #computerscience, #datascience, #Earthscience, #economics, #engineering, #marinescience, #mathematics, #physics, and #statistics at partner institutions.
