Just published my first #Shiny app! I entered the Big 10's 2025 Data Viz Championship and made a dashboard about the #NationalParks. If you're planning a vacation (well, not in January) or a nearby 7-year-old just *has* to know which parks have a specific animal species, check it out! https://lnkd.in/g6R-ZJZm I still have plenty of ideas that didn't make it into this draft, so I'll post again as I revise and add features. #RStats #Quarto #Dashboard

Our Founder, Ryan Baillargeon, was a speaker at the Engaging Networks Community Conference in Washington D.C.! 🌟 Ryan presented 'Mapping and Mobilizing - Canada's Captive Wildlife' highlighting Grassriots' innovative strategies designed for World Animal Protection Canada / Protection mondiale des animaux to support a rich data experience and flexible campaigns architecture on Engaging Networks. These strategies involved integrating Google Sheets, MapBox, and Engaging Networks to facilitate dynamic content updates, campaign linking, and visualization. It highlights key learning outcomes and demonstrates effective visualization techniques that can drive engagement and advocacy impact. I'm thrilled to announce that I developed a console-based "Wildlife Tracking System" designed to assist park rangers in managing and tracking wildlife sightings in protected areas. The system features a user-friendly text-based interface that allows rangers to add new sightings, view all recorded sightings, and search for specific species sightings. The data is stored in a list of dictionaries, ensuring easy management and retrieval of information. The program also includes robust input validation for date and time to maintain data integrity. This project demonstrates my ability to build practical Python applications with a focus on usability, data handling, and user experience. 🔷Imports and Initialization: The datetime module is imported to handle date and time validations. An empty list sightings is initialized to store the wildlife sightings. 🔷Functions: add_sighting(): Handles user input for adding a new sighting. It validates the date and time inputs to ensure correct formats. view_sightings(): Displays all the sightings recorded in the sightings list. It checks if there are any sightings first. search_sightings_by_species(): Allows the user to search for sightings by species name. It uses a list comprehension to filter the sightings list. 🔷Main Menu: The main_menu() function serves as the user interface, providing a loop that displays menu options and calls the appropriate function based on user input. The loop continues until the user chooses to exit. 🔷Program Execution: The if __name__ == "__main__": block ensures that the main_menu() function is executed only when the script is run directly (not when imported as a module).

We had a loyal customer complain yesterday about how bird species started rendering much worse in Hypernatural lately. I never expected to look into this kind of bug report! After quickly trying to repro, just with birds I know off the top of my head — turns out that Flux Schnell does render birds with much less accuracy than SDXL! We recently changed our base image model to Schnell because the quality is **much better** overall, but ... not for birds, I guess. 🤷🏻♂️🤯 Here are a few examples I tried: pileated woodpecker, robin, bluejay. The better ones are all SDXL. Incredible. So, yesterday I quickly added a flag for the customer to continue on using SDXL for their renders. If any other birders are interested in Hypernatural, let me know and I can flip the flag for you, too! (Flux Schnell does a **much** better job with overall composition, especially with multiple subjects — you can see that in the bluejay image, and notice the worms in the robin one.) #customerinsights #midwesternbirding #birders

BEES and TREES | After the merge, what happened? | Part 6 | 20th May 2024 On World Bee Day, what better way to celebrate than with non-other than an update on our hives that remain, remember now we have 3 of them. Thanks to Lisa we have some footage to share and I'll do my best to explain exactly what the bees are up to! Let's remember that so far we have seen and shared:- Video 1; On 29th March they installed the apiary, some thing we attached in the post of that time. Video 2; was one with some sad news about bee hive 1 on 25th April. Video 3; 9th May we showed a solution to save our first hive which was in danger of being lost as there wasn't a Queen bee. So with the aid of newspaper, we were attempting a merge of hive 1 with hive 2. Video 4; 16th May where we were able to see success in the merging of the hives. Video 5; also 16th May - our slow motion special which focussed on the entrance to the hive; showing clearly the pollen laden workers (females), and some drones (males) with their rounded bottoms, black in colour) struggling to land. So it's video 6 time now - what are we showing? The 11 frames for the bees with a dummy board, and where the bees persist in drawing out some extra comb, pulling it away from the internal frame. Videos 7, 8 and 9 will follow shortly (we can only upload one video per post), and as everyone loves bees, we will make every attempt to follow up with even more bee stories. For now are delighted to see that Lisa has turned a tragedy into success and we have a lot of bees, too many or not you might ask? Stick with that train of thought 😀 as it can be dangerous to the whole bee colony to have too many bees living there. #Preppindata Challenge: Week 18: San Diego Zoo TC24 Special, hosted by Jenny Martin This week, I worked through the San Diego Zoo TC24 Special challenge. We were provided with three Excel files: plants, animals, and wildfire tables. I solved this challenge by KNIME Here’s a summary of what I solved: Unpivoting Data: I unpivoted the plants and animals tables to add a new column with animal or plants. In the animals table, the class names are joined in both Latin and English. I used Column Expressions to select only the English class names and split by cell splitter node. Combining Data: I used the Concatenate node to union the plants and animal tables and created a new RowID with help of rowed node. Then, I employed the Column Renamer node to rename the columns appropriately. Data Cleaning: For the wildfire table, I fixed the format issue where the apostrophe was encoded as '. I replaced them with the correct characters with the help of String manipulation node. Joining Tables: I joined the plants and animals tables with the wildfire table and wrote the final dataset to an Excel file using the Excel Writer node.
