🚢✨ Hurtigruten has been included on Conde Nast Traveler's Bright Ideas list for 2024 - making us the only company to appear all three years since the list launched! Conde Nast Traveler, the world’s leading travel magazine, launched the Bright Ideas in Travel list in 2022 to celebrate the people and projects tackling travel’s biggest challenges with smart, impactful solutions. This time, it’s our Towards Zero Food Waste initiative that’s earned us a spot. With our “Farm to Table to Farm” model, we’ve created a closed-loop system to minimize food waste. Edible food waste from our ships is collected and sent to a composting facility in Lofoten. There, 319,000 pounds of waste is turned into rich compost, which we deliver back to local farms, where we source ingredients for Norway’s Coastal Kitchen. Passengers enjoy local, sustainably grown produce, and the cycle goes on 🌱 Being on the Bright Ideas list is a huge honour, and this recognition from Conde Nast Traveler means a lot to our team. Read more about the 2024 list and the other innovative projects featured here.

An outstanding achievement from Hurtigruten Few organizations are capable of eliminating food waste entirely. Zero-waste cooking represents a key part of a broader movement to live sustainably and minimize environmental impact. The focus is on making the most of the resources at our disposal. Innovative solutions to food waste are needed. Through efforts such as composting edible food waste, Hurtigruten are pioneering new ways to drive down food waste. #TowardsZeroFoodWaste
Couldn't be prouder or more excited: Hurtigruten is the o-n-l-y company to make Condé Nast Traveler's Bright Ideas list all three years since its inception in 2022!! In 2022, it was my very own initiative, the Black Traveler Advisory Board, that made the very first list, and last year, our Sea Zero project, our zero-emission ship that we will launch in 2030. For the Bright Ideas 2024 list, it's our most recent industry-leading initiative to reduce food waste, spearheaded by our amazing Culinary Director Øistein Nilsen, that was commended: "In April 2024, the Norwegian cruise line Hurtigruten announced it would be implementing a closed-loop system to keep its food waste out of the landfill, where decomposing food creates roughly 6% to 8% of all greenhouse gas emissions. The company launched an initiative called Towards Zero Food Waste, also known as “Farm to Table to Farm,” under which edible food waste is collected from Hurtigruten ships and taken to a composting facility in the Lofoten Islands, where an estimated 319,000 pounds of waste is turned into nutrient-rich compost. The compost is delivered to Myklevik Gård, one of the farms from where Hurtigruten sources its ingredients. Passengers enjoy the produce at the onboard restaurant, Norway’s Coastal Kitchen, and the cycle begins again." From CNT editors' own intro: "Our Bright Ideas in Travel list, first launched in 2022, recognizes the players, places, and projects that are approaching travel’s most pressing issues with thoughtfulness and zeal. In our third iteration of this franchise, we've selected trailblazers who have demonstrated a positive impact on the travel industry in 2024 or celebrated a significant milestone in their efforts to prove how travel can move our world forward. Their unique and pioneering approaches straddle the realms of sustainability, community, inclusion, accessibility, conservation, innovation, and wellness." So many great companies - large and small - have been highlighted in the past three years, and it's such an honor for us to be included all three years!

https://lnkd.in/denU6WST 5 ways to be a marine sustainability champion. 1. Choose electric or human-powered watercraft: Opt for electric boats or kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards that do not require fuel or produce emissions. This reduces your carbon footprint and minimizes water pollution. 2. Practice responsible fishing: When fishing, follow catch-and-release practices and use sustainable fishing gear. Avoid overfishing certain species and adhere to fishing regulations to maintain the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems. 3. Reduce waste and litter: Keep your surroundings and the water clean by disposing of all waste properly. Bring reusable water bottles and containers, and avoid single-use plastics like straws and bags. Additionally, participate in beach or river cleanups to help remove trash and debris from the water. 4. Respect marine life and habitats: Observe marine life from a distance, avoiding any disruption or injury. Do not feed or disturb wildlife and refrain from touching or stepping on coral reefs or mangroves, as they are delicate ecosystems. Stay informed about local regulations to prevent damage to vulnerable habitats and species. 5. Support local conservation efforts: Contribute to the preservation of water ecosystems by supporting local organizations or initiatives dedicated to conserving marine resources and protecting waterways. Donate or volunteer with groups focused on water management, habitat restoration, pollution prevention, or marine education. Arivo.online

Rethinking Hospitality in Wildlife Habitats: A Call for Sustainable Tourism When we were kids, visiting national parks and game reserves was a magical experience. The Big Five roamed freely, and wildlife encounters were almost effortless. Today, the story is different—spotting these iconic animals often requires expert guides who know exactly where to find them. One major contributor to this shift is the increasing presence of hotels and lodges within protected areas. The Maasai Mara alone now has over 100 hotels, lodges, and camps inside and around the reserve, with some estimates listing over 230 properties. While tourism is essential for conservation and economic growth, infrastructure development inside parks disrupts natural habitats, alters wildlife behavior, and contributes to environmental degradation. Sustainability in tourism is not just about reducing plastic waste or conserving water; it’s about ensuring that our activities do not interfere with the delicate balance of nature. Relocating accommodations outside park boundaries would: ✅ Preserve natural migration patterns and breeding grounds ✅ Minimize human-wildlife conflict ✅ Encourage eco-friendly tourism models that benefit both conservation and local communities If we truly value conservation, we must prioritize the long-term health of our ecosystems over short-term convenience. The future of sustainable tourism depends on responsible choices—ones that allow nature to thrive while still offering remarkable experiences for generations to come. What are your thoughts? Should we reconsider where we build tourism infrastructure to better protect our wildlife? #SustainableTourism #Conservation #WildlifeProtection #EcoTourism #Sustainability
