Teka Miller-Alston, Robert Broome, CAE and I were privileged to spend the day with Kelli Roberts and Julie Williams with CLA (CliftonLarsonAllen) discussing the pipeline and CLA's efforts with their pilot Academy in conjunction with the Hispanic Leage of Winston-Salem and Forsyth Technical Community College. My takeaways from our incredible conversation: - There are no quick fixes. Taking something from concept to application involving so many individuals from around the country takes time, perseverance and agility if you want to create something sustainable. - Show up and plan to stay! Yes, we need to plant routes, we can't fix a people problem like we're sourcing raw materials for a widget. We need to show up, invest and plant roots in the community. Those roots will grow into the beautiful garden like CLA is growing. - Lead with love! Jen Leary shared the sentiment with me back in May when she spoke about this pilot program. Listening to the dedication and compassion of the CLA family to identify, develop and support their first cohort is inspiring on so many levels. We heard countless stories of the CLA family willingly sharing extra time to help others reach for dreams never thought possible. We talk about how the profession gets a bad rap and that we need to change the narrative. We need to focus on the heart of this profession. CPAs, and especially the CPAs at CLA, have incredible hearts for their teams, their clients and especially their communities. Sharing stories of how one firm, in a pilot phase, changed the lives of 11 individuals and is creating a model to ramp up talent development locally is a testament to what WE can do and North Carolina Association of CPAs (NCACPA) is here for it! #leadership #CPAs #NCACPA #TEAM #CEOonthego

It's Flashback Friday! This week we're taking a look back to our Leading Australian Resilient Communities (LARC) program from 2022-2023. Delivered in partnership with the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation as part of a national initiative, the LARC program in Tasmania was designed to amplify already resilient leadership on our North West Coast. This 5-day program delivered over 8 months brought together 26 participants online and in-person to expand their understanding of regional development, strategic foresight, adaptive and place-based leadership, and resilience. Participants worked in teams to identify and develop projects known as Community Action Initiatives aimed at addressing adaptive challenges for the region, often partnering with not-for-profit organisations to achieve their goals. Projects across the North West Coast covered a diverse range of activities including; mapping mental health services with Burnie Works, a resilient farming forum that considered succession planning and diversification of land use in agriculture, community learning and mentoring, and improving signage and activities for tourists across the coast pathway between Wynyard and Burnie. Industrial diversification, placemaking investments, regional collaboration, a mindset shift, talent retention and attraction strategies are some of the factors local elected and business leaders credited for the momentum the South Bend-Elkhart region is experiencing at IBJ Media’s Engage Indiana series event highlighting Elkhart, Marshall and St. Joseph counties. For an area still largely regarded for its manufacturing prowess, the northern Indiana region is experiencing what its leaders refer to as a renaissance. While there's still a lot of work to be done, one thing was predominantly clear, the region is not where it used to be. Did you know EdTrust-Midwest was among the many organizations across Michigan that understood the importance of implementing new national college- and career-ready standards and of Michigan’s leadership in the development of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium? These initiatives enabled Michigan to adopt an assessment system that was aligned with higher national standards and comparable across more than 20 states using the same system. Business Minister Richard Lochhead co-chaired a meeting of the Life Sciences Industry Leadership Group. Mr Lochhead laid the foundations for a new growth strategy publishing in 2025. Life Sciences is worth more than £10 billion to Scotland, supporting 44,200 jobs.

My son, Lyle Alenstein, wrote this article for The Daily Collegian (Penn State University). He covers the football team and is immersed in the team's grind. His article references Penn State’s 5-0 start this season and is a great reminder that success, whether in football or business, doesn’t come in a perfect package. The Nittany Lions have faced their share of challenges—slow starts, penalties, and missed opportunities—but they've remained focused on "going 1-0 each week," maintaining an undefeated record while other top teams have stumbled. Running an early or growth stage business is no different. We all face setbacks and detractors—supply chain issues, fluctuating markets, or internal inefficiencies—but the key is to keep pushing forward and refining processes without losing sight of the bigger goal. Per Coach Franklin, it’s far better to correct mistakes after a win.
