How likely is “likely”? This was the question put to me by David Rankine of Cydea at #risk London (and, albeit without Lego, by Philip Tetlock and NATO). Underlying the question is another. Let’s say installing a battery next to your solar farm is not worth it if prices are stable, but it becomes very valuable when electricity costs spike. Calculating that value is everyday work for some of my former finance colleagues. But how do you express those benefits in terms that are broadly understood? How do you build a compelling narrative? Clue: if you use any of the terms #BlackScholes, #MonteCarlo, #VAR, 'in the wings', or rNPV then you fail!
