Interesing key points and figures of this report © February 2024 | International Bank for Reconstruction and Development / The World Bank.   📈EMDCs (Emerging Markets and Developing Countries) will require vast amounts of financing to develop their hydrogen economies.   ✔️As a rule-of-thumb, producing 1 million tonne (Mt) of renewable hydrogen per year requires approximately 10 GW of electrolyzers, 20 GW of renewable power, and $30 billion in investments. ✔️100 Mt of fossil-based hydrogen now produced each year with clean hydrogen would cut annual CO2 emissions by a gigatonne (Gt). ✔️A global supply of 40 Mt of clean hydrogen is expected by 2030. ✔️Projects announced to date would produce 25 Mt of renewable hydrogen a year and 13 Mt of low carbon hydrogen. ✔️As of August 2023, less than 10 percent of all projects announced worldwide have reached the stage known as “final investment decision” (FID). Europe’s Hydrogen Producers Cut Reliance on China: Game-Changer 💹 or Growing Pain ⏹️? 🌍 Boost for Renewable Hydrogen The European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) is stepping up support for renewable hydrogen with €1.2B in funding through its latest auction. By offering fixed premiums, the EHB bridges cost gaps and accelerates Europe’s transition to green energy. ⚙️ New Rules Shake Things Up As a new "resilience requirement", hydrogen producers who are bidding for this funding will have to limit the sourcing of electrolyzer stacks from China to a proportion of no more than 25% (in MWe). The Global Hydrogen Review 2024 from the International Energy Agency (IEA) outlines some significant developments in the sector: 🔑 Key takeaways: 1️⃣ Electrolysis Projects Soar: By 2030, low-emission hydrogen production could reach 49 Mtpa, with electrolysis projects leading the way. However, only 4% of projects have reached final investment decision (FID), highlighting the gap between ambition and execution. 2️⃣ Cost Challenges Remain: Inflation and financing hurdles are pushing up project costs, potentially dampening the impact of government support schemes. 3️⃣ China's Dominance: China is strengthening its leadership in electrolyser deployment, holding 60% of the global manufacturing capacity, driving down costs similar to its role in solar PV. #China_Hydrogen_News 【China Hydrogen News】The National Development and Reform Commission of China Promotes Integrated Hydrogen Demonstration Projects to Support the Development of Green and Low-Carbon Technology On September 20th, the General Office of China's National Development and Reform Commission issued a notice to initiate the application process for the second batch of green and low-carbon advanced technology demonstration projects. This application focuses on "production, storage, transportation, and utilization" integrated hydrogen demonstration projects, with a special emphasis on supporting the construction of hydrogen transportation pipelines. In addition, the demonstration projects of green hydrogen equipment technology verification bases will also be supported, including key technologies such as alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer testing, hydrogen storage system and process inspection, mobile refueling system evaluation, and hydrogen quality analysis testing. These projects aim to clarify the application scenarios of hydrogen energy and ensure its compliance with national industrial policies. The release of this notice signifies that China has taken another step forward in technological advancement and industrial layout in the field of hydrogen energy. By supporting integrated hydrogen energy demonstration projects, China can not only promote the innovation and application of hydrogen energy technology but also facilitate the commercialization and scaling up of green and low-carbon technology. This is of great significance for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, optimizing the energy structure, and achieving carbon neutrality goals.
