Air Products has received funding from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to build two high-capacity, publicly accessible, low-carbon Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS) in Duisburg and Meckenheim. "Funding for the stations was made available as part of NRW’s hydrogen roadmap. NRW has set ambitious goals to decarbonize heavy-duty transportation and has set a target of having 11,000 hydrogen fuel cell trucks in the region by 2030. NRW also has set additional 2030 goals of having 3,800 fuel cell buses for public transportation and 200 hydrogen fueling stations." In order to be able to rely on emission-free drives in heavy goods transport in the future, we must create the conditions now. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck just personally handed over the 72.5-million-euro grant notification for our IPCEI project Green Hydrogen @ Blue Danube to our CEO Daniel Teichmann in Berlin! The Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) and IPCEI Hydrogen specifically aim to promote the market ramp-up of green hydrogen by linking European hydrogen projects that will generate positive spill-over effects across the EU. We are very thankful for receiving this funding grant by the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz and Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie, represented by Ministerial Director Markus Dr. Wittmann. It will significantly accelerate our mission to provide the missing link to a global sustainable hydrogen economy. In our project Green Hydrogen @ Blue Danube, we are building the first industrial-size LOHC hub in Southern Bavaria by 2028 to release up to 1,800 tons of green hydrogen per year to supply industrial off-takers in the Danube region and for possible pipeline injection. Europe has voted. And although the election results of extremist parties in some European countries are very worrying, there is also good news. A large majority of Europeans voted for democracy, for openness, tolerance, and a sustainable, innovative Europe. This is an important sign because there are big challenges ahead. One of the greatest is the transition to a sustainable, green economy. Green hydrogen will play a decisive role in this industrial transformation. Yet, recent studies show Europe is in danger of losing the race to industrializing hydrogen technologies, albeit being a global innovation leader. That is why we need an ambitious agenda supporting green hydrogen for the upcoming legislative term: #1 Industrializing Innovation: Europeans are technology leaders in hydrogen, but we must get better at bringing sustainable technologies to market. A new industrial deal should complement the ambitious goals of the Green Deal to promote entrepreneurship and innovation. #2 Shifting towards Gigawatt Scale: Hydrogen is key to decarbonizing processes from producing steel to fueling chemical plants. To create the corresponding European green hydrogen economy as soon as possible, we need to step up our ambitions. It is time to move our hydrogen projects from Megawatt to Gigawatt scale. This should also be reflected in the EU’s support and funding efforts. #3 EU Funds for the European Hydrogen Value Chain: Countries across the globe use strategic investments to strengthen their domestic hydrogen value chain. This one-sided market support creates distortions on a global level. That is why we also need to prioritize our local value chain in EU efforts and keep our industry competitive. #4 Tackling the Implementation Gap: The roads from project planning to execution are too complex and too slow. We need to prioritize projects, speed up approval processes, and digitize bureaucratic procedures. The coming years will be decisive to convert the EU’s green technology leadership into sustainable economic and job growth. The European institutions should make it a political priority to help create the green hydrogen ecosystem our industry will need very soon. #PORTnews 💧 Good news for the future Hydrogen Hub Hamburg: The Hamburg Hydrogen Industry Network ‘HH-WIN’ will become part of the nationwide, almost 10,000-kilometre-long hydrogen core network. This important decision has been made by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs in Berlin and the Federal Network Agency in Bonn. This means that Hamburg's industry will be able to benefit from a standardised hydrogen network fee in the future. For Hamburger Energienetze GmbH, which is implementing HH-WIN in the port area of the Port of Hamburg, this step will provide financial security for further expansion after the launch in 2027, which is expected to reach a network length of around 60 kilometres by 2032. Dr Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics and Innovation is happy about this decision: "This is a great success! All sections of the Hamburg pipeline will be integrated into the core German hydrogen network. This will enable our industrial companies in Hamburg to easily obtain hydrogen and reduce their CO2 emissions. The hydrogen produced in Hamburg or imported via Hamburg can also be distributed throughout Germany right from the start. ✈ Conference Reflections from Senior FutureGrid Engineer ✈ Dr. Lisa Witty, a Senior Engineer on the FutureGrid Deblending Hydrogen for Transportation project, has recently returned from two events: European Transport Conference in Antwerp and, closer to home, Cenex Expo 2024 at the Milbrook Proving Ground. As always, conference findings are shared within the team and we thought it was a good opportunity to showcase the types of stakeholder activity we undertake as a team and as a business.🤝 Lisa presented at the main plenary of Cenex, sharing her thoughts on the future of the gas grid, as hydrogen becomes part of the future energy landscape. This led to interesting discussions about the energy transition and how the future of hydrogen transportation may develop with assistance from National Gas for refuelling and hydrogen supply.⛽   Lisa, a hydrogen expert said how great it was to see a variety of hydrogen transportation options, with vehicles from Wrightbus, Toyota Motor Corporation and Vauxhall Motors Ltd as well as opportunities to discuss refuelling, challenges and the future with a wide range of the hydrogen transportation supply chain members.   The ETC 2024 event had a greater focus on technical papers, with an academic and consultant viewpoint of transportation strategies for Europe. She saw that decarbonisation was seen as a real challenge across many of the different transport methodologies, with hydrogen not yet seen as part of the solution. Despite the omission of hydrogen from the proceedings, there were excellent opportunities to network with a wide range of technical abilities and interests including economics, decarbonisation, social-politic and engineering backgrounds bringing hydrogen to the forefront of the discussions. She shared with the team that the two events were opposite in approach and opinion to each other with one being led by academia and one being led by suppliers, and this has generated wider discussions at National Gas about how we engage different types of stakeholders in the future. The construction of the 60-kilometre H2 pipeline could reduce the emissions currently caused by the use of natural gas in Hamburg by up to 34 per cent by 2031 - provided that Hamburg's industry seizes the opportunity to switch energy sources.

Yesterday, the Minister for Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine Westphalia, Mona Neubaur, handed over a funding grant of 1.4 million euros to the "H2 Solution Lab" for the Westphalian University in Düsseldorf. The funding notification was handed over to Prof. Dr. Michael Brodmann, Vice President of Westfälische Hochschule, and myself as the Chairman of the University Council.   The hydrogen lab at the WHS is the largest and first project in Gelsenkirchen to be recommended for funding under the "5-Location Program" by the Structural Strengthening Council. It will serve as a basis for the development and transfer of future-oriented technologies for the production and application of green hydrogen. With a total funding volume of 42 million euros, the new building will be approximately 2,000 square meters in size and provide all necessary development, demonstration, and transfer structures for hydrogen technology. It will be designed to provide insights for research and transfer to components, subsystems, or complete systems. The range will extend from valves, electrolysis, fuel cell, and burner systems to compressors and storage, up to complete hydrogen production or hydrogen utilization systems.   As a board member of an industry company based in the region with many years of experience in the hydrogen field, I welcome the development of technological and competence-based solutions for the market ramp-up of hydrogen in the region. The establishment of the "H2 Solution Lab" is an outstanding achievement that could only be realized through close cooperation with the city of Gelsenkirchen and numerous actors in the region. Exciting developments in the hydrogen industry at this year's Hannover Messe! With a strong emphasis on hydrogen as the future energy source for our industries, there is a clear call for accelerated economic policies to drive industrial growth, especially with the aim to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Germany is investing heavily into such projects, such as the upcoming hydrogen factory in Neumünster set to produce 5000 tons of green hydrogen annually by 2026. Additionally, recent openings like the facility in Landshut, Niederbayern, and EWE's completion of an earth gas pipeline for hydrogen transport starting in 2028, demonstrate significant progress. To ensure a smooth transition, public perception is key (links in the comments). A German study found that only 27% of respondents were familiar with green hydrogen. To bridge this gap, a hydrogen project led by Verena Riegler, PhD candidate at RWTH Marketing Group, in collaboration with the Kreis Düren is conducting surveys to gauge public acceptance and understand the impact of firsthand experience, such as riding in a hydrogen bus.
