Fuel based on solar energy and microalgae may soon take flight ✈️ We are part of ALGAESOL, a project which aims to accelerate the transition to biofuels for aircraft and cargo ships. – Our goal is to develop a cost-effective and commercial solution that benefits as many as possible. A key step is to minimise microbial contamination during algae cultivation. By improving our contamination control methods, we can reduce losses by minimising the need for costly restarts and cleanings. This will not only make the technology cheaper but also enhance the quality and quantity of our production, says Nikola Medić from Teknologisk Institut. In collaboration with our project partners, we optimise the process so that fuel based on solar energy, carbon dioxide, and organic waste can be tested more effectively as new, clean fuels. 🤝 The project unites Teknologisk Institut, NORCE Norwegian Research Centre, Leitat Technological Center, Universitat de Girona, SimTech, SOCAR Turkey R&D and Innovation, and AMIRES. The Horizon Europe program supports the project with 4 million euros. #dkgreen #dkenergy #microalgae #greentransition #energy

CeNTI participates in a new European project focused on circular bioenergy systems. Called COSEC - "Biogenic CO2 capture into Sustainable Energy Carriers", this new research initiative is centered on environmental sustainability, aiming to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the mitigation of climate change. The Project is based on capture and conversion of CO2 during algae cultivation for the subsequent production of energy-rich biomass (circular bioenergy system). CeNTI, in particular, will be involved in the evaluation and utilisation of the biomass for the production of Hydrogen, a renewable and environmentally friendly energy source. COSEC's kick-off meeting was recently held at the University of the Algarve (Portugal) and gathered the consortium’s entities. The Project is funded by the European Commission through the HORIZON Research and Innovation Actions Programme. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eumbvMbE. A recent symposium convened by Manfred Dannenfeld of Landberatung brought together 25 participants from member farms alongside local authorities stakeholders, in collaboration with the Interreg North Sea Programme #BIOZE, represented by Michael Kralemann and Dr. Ernst Kürsten. The focal point of discussions centered on the impending conclusion of the EEG subsidy for electricity generation, which has sustained biogas plants for the past two decades. As the sector confronts the challenge of adapting to a new tendering model, concerns over the economic viability of continued operations loom large. This is especially true for plants with surplus electricity facing market prices insufficient for sustained profitability, particularly when waste heat cannot be effectively harnessed or marketed.... #development #energy #biogas Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente Energikontor Väst EM Normandie Business School 3N Kompetenzzentrum e.V. 🚀 Flashes from the #Biomethaverse Pilot Sites: where innovations in biomethane are taking shape. 🔹 France: The ENGIE BiOZ pilot site has moved to Coëvrons Mayenne, offering similar specifications to the original Eppeville site. Covering 2.6 hectares, it produces 2 million m³ of CH4 annually and has a capacity of 21 GWh, enough renewable gas to supply 1,900 homes, with up to 220 Nm³/h injected into the grid. 🔹 Italy: Significant advancements were made in the Italian case study with the completion of the ozonolysis plant installation. This includes a 12 m³ liquid oxygen tank, an ozone generator, and, most importantly, the contact reactor, where sludge and ozone will interact to enhance methane production. 🔹 Greece: The Greek demo is making significant progress in optimizing its biogas-to-biomethane conversion technology. The team is currently focussing on refining the reactor’s design, a key component in ensuring the effective upgrading of raw biogas into high-purity biomethane. The reactor serves as the core of the demo, where biogas undergoes a three-step thermocatalytic methanation process. 🔹 Sweden: In Höganäs, the Swedish demo plant has begun long-term trials on biological methanation of syngas from biomass gasification. A key collaboration between Wätsilä and RISE has made this possible. 🔹 Ukraine: The war has severely impacted the Ukrainian biogas sector. Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, 17 GW of Ukrainian power generation has remained occupied. Beginning in March 2024, an additional 9 GW have been damaged or completely destroyed. Stay tuned for more updates from the Biomethaverse project! https://lnkd.in/eync7yNH #biomethane #sustainable #innovation ISINNOVA - Research Innovation Sustainability ENEA UABio Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) RISE Research Institutes of Sweden Cortus Energy AB (CE) Wärtsilä Lab Crigen AERIS Tecnologias Ambientales SL Leitat Technological Center FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg Gruppo CAP Energigas Sverige Politecnico di Milano SIAD S.p.A. This will be the fourth year I've presented at the European Biosolids & Bioresources Conference & Exhibition regarding methane emissions from anaerobic digestion. It's good to see there is a lot happening on this subject. It's almost as if people have been listening to me :) Matthew Smyth at Aqua Environment Solutions was the inspiration for this year's paper. Last year, myself, Joe Mann and Tom Goodwin presented on 'Post-digestion methane emissions: quantification, mitigation, and appropriate measures', which was the third in a series of related papers. In the Q&A session, Matt asked the question 'What does good look like', but we sadly ran out of time to discuss it fully. 12-months on, we've got a lot more data, which I'm frantically trying to organise into a coherent format. There are the challenges of IED, appropriate measures, and improvement conditions, and other than PAS 110, there is no current protocol for quantifying residual biogas in sewage sludge digestate. What we do know... ...is that the anaerobic digestate stability requirement in PAS 110:2014 is wholly inappropriate for sewage sludge - it is not what good looks like. I'd go so far to say that the requirements in the original PAS 110:2010 and OFW004-005, are also not what good looks like. The EA are trying to co-ordinate a benchmarking exercise, with the English WaSCs looking at a collaborative approach for determining residual biogas, and DESNZ have just released a number of work packages looking at methane emissions from anaerobic digestion (MEAD). So there is a lot of work being done in this area. This year, the presentation and paper is another collaboration. I've dragged Joe back for another year, and dragged in Matt for asking the question in the first place, and Paul Fountain has joined us as well as he and his team at Thames Water have been doing lots of great work in this area, so this year, the authors are: Steve Bungay | AD Ingenuity LLP Joe Mann | AD Ingenuity LLP Matthew Smyth | Aqua Environment Solutions Paul Fountain | Thames Water What does good look like? Come and ask us on the day, but I warn you, the ink will still be wet. #methane #biogas #processemissions #residualbiogas #RBP #BMP #residualemissionspotential Aqua Enviro There is then a wider question. Tim Evans always used to say that the worms don't care if the digestate is sewage sludge biosolids or non-sewage biosolids. If the worms don't care, and we are seeking a safe, stackable, stable product, what is good for sewage sludge, should be good for everybody else.
