This is my 1,798th post! Photography has always been a passion of mine, and this platform is such a meaningful way for me to share that creative outlet. I’m also thrilled to know there are others in our bronchiectasis community who share this love of photography. I can’t wait to feature them and their incredible work in the future. That said, my favorite photograph of all time wasn’t taken by me. It’s a heartwarming shot of bronchi-sister Glenda’s grandson. Several Christmases ago, he received a toy drill as a gift, but having watched his grandma nebulize so often, he thought it was his very own nebulizer💚💜❤️ Moments like this remind us that living with bronchiectasis is a family affair. Rather than feeling ashamed of a condition that requires us to clear mucus multiple times a day, we can embrace the hidden lessons our disease offers. It teaches our children and grandchildren that life isn’t always perfect, but when challenges arise, we adapt and do what we can to thrive. If that’s not a life lesson worth celebrating, I don’t know what is! When I grow up I want to be brave. Francis, UT. 2024 In my art, I try to see the world through the eyes of children. This photo is a reflection of that—a way for me to engage with the world differently, with curiosity and wonder. Photography allows me to challenge what I think I know about life, people, animals, and nature. Photographing children, in particular, has given me the chance to revisit my perspective on life. As I grow older, I think more about raising a family and the kind of life I want for myself. My art gives me the space to reflect on those questions, even as I navigate living further from my mom, being estranged from my father, and dealing with the challenges that adulthood inevitably brings. These experiences weigh on me at times, but when I photograph children, I find a chance to reconnect with the curiosity and potential that once seemed so abundant. With the Holidays in full swing, many of you will be taking many (more) pictures than you already do...and you will be in more than usual as well. I thought this week I'd give you a few tips that might make your experience, and your results, better. 1) Sometimes there are several people taking pictures of a group of people. It makes a much bigger impact when everyone is looking in the same direction. I wait until everyone else is finishing, and then say, "Everyone look this way!" and snap it. Your picture will be the best one. 2) When photographing a group, notice where the faces are in relation to one another. If the faces are grouped well, the image will be better than if you don't pay attention to it. The should be consistently spaced, and not one on top of the other like a totem pole. 3) Take a quick look at the background before you take the photo. Make sure there isn't someone right over the shoulder of your subject, or a brightly colored distraction. The picture isn't just the subject, it is both the subject and the background, and the background matters.
