The SaaS and content worlds were sooo shaky when 2023 ended. Crazy economy. AI. Content getting less in demand. I felt the aftermath for quarters. I was ready to give in and just call 2024 my uneventful year. Well, until the BER months kicked in. 🔥 I got to kickoff Mailmodo’s new segment, The Lifecyclist with Mariana Klober last week. (Check out this email tool. They have crazy interactive emails that are sure to ⬆️ your conversions.) 🔥 I’m now a Databox guest post author and my first piece is publishing tomorrow. 🔥 I also recently got signed as a Product Developer (and Marketer) for a really huge community in the Philippines 🇵🇭. I’m happy that the seeds I planted early this year FRUITED up before the year ended. I've neglected my own marketing and personal offers, but I'm glad I had a slow 2024. Had time to think things through — strategically with alignment and intent. And glad to clear the things and plans inside my head with Nathalie M.. Building up from what she said, "We're stacking value, banking for 2025." 💪🏼 Things will always be shaky every now and then. 💻 The Digital Rabbit Hole: How a Short Break Can Turn into a Deep Dive 📱 It's a common occurrence: you start with a quick break to check your phone, catch up on a news article, or even just scroll through social media, and before you know it, hours have passed. This phenomenon can be attributed to several factors: 👉🏽 Hyperlinks and Related Content: Websites are designed to keep you engaged. Hyperlinks and related content suggestions can lead you down unexpected paths, making it easy to lose track of time. 👉🏽Infinite Scroll: Many platforms, especially social media, use infinite scroll, meaning content keeps loading as you scroll. This can make it difficult to stop, even if you're running out of time. 👉🏽Personalized Algorithms: Websites and apps often use algorithms to personalize content based on your browsing history. This can lead to recommendations that are so relevant and engaging that you find yourself clicking on one link after another. 👉🏽Dopamine Loops: Engaging with online content can trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. This can create a positive feedback loop, making it difficult to resist the urge to keep scrolling. Here’s how to never run out of creative ideas 👇 Take the train 🚂 No, really. Since moving in October my commute has gone from a 20 minute round trip, to over two hours on the train. That’s a bloody long time to sit there and do nothing. And yes, I pretty much do nothing. And yes, it’s boring. But I’ve noticed this strange phenomenon where, since having a longer commute, I think of way better ideas at work💡 I think we’ve developed into a society that’s constantly distracted. Don’t get me wrong, I think technology has provided us with a lot of affordances, but most of us are chronically attached to our phones. Well at least I know I am. Taking a step away from the distractions gives my mind time to be bored. And that boredom is crucial for creativity, (that’s probably why we get our best ideas in the shower or before bed). What my commute costs me in time 🕥 has increased my creativity by tenfold. As a marketer (who literally has to come up with ideas for a living), I’d say that’s a pretty good investment. Last year, my husband and I took the big adult leap and bought our first house! 🎉 Super exciting, right? Except it turned my breezy 25-minute commute into a full hour (and that’s on a good day, without traffic). To make the most of the drive, I’ve been diving into podcasts (let’s be real, it’s 60/40 personal growth vs. light-hearted fun). Yesterday, I got completely hooked on The Diary Of A CEO episode with David Epstein and Steven Bartlett. Now, I won’t even attempt to summarize the entire two-hour conversation (seriously, go listen!), but there were a few key ideas that hit me—especially when I think about careers in marketing. The one that really got me? Their take on failure and disruption. Bartlett mentioned he hired a “Head of Failure and Experimentation.” I know, it sounds wild, but it’s all about keeping things fresh, pushing boundaries, and shaking up the status quo. If they’re not hitting their target failure rate, they’re not experimenting enough. 🤯 Sound familiar, marketers? Algorithms change, interests shift, and, honestly, the world can flip overnight. If you’re too comfortable with what’s working right now, you’re on track to fail (and not in the fun, experimental way). We’ve got to stay agile, reassess, and adjust our strategies constantly. What works today might flop tomorrow, and if you’re not ready to pivot, you’ll lose that edge. My biggest takeway from Epstein? Generalists win. He dissected the 10,000-hour rule and realized that mastering a range of skills beats hyper-specialization. This had me thinking about the rise of the "Full Stack Marketer." Semrush defines a Full Stack Marketer as someone who covers a wide array of tasks—basically, they’re the Swiss Army knife of marketing. And as Epstein pointed out, generalists are better at: ⚡ Pivoting when things shift 🧠 Challenging conventional thinking 💪 Handling a broad spectrum of responsibilities (let's hear it for my fellow marketers in #SMBs or agencies!) The more you know, the more you can adapt. And in our ever-evolving world of marketing, that’s everything. I have been creeping around. 2024 was insane for me so I’ve been lightly tip-toeing into 2025. I took a 21 day break from Facebook, TikTok (I watched y’all go crazy over that 12 hour ban!) and Instagram. Replaced it with some meditation, healthier eating, prayer time and upskilling. The results? 📚Read 2 books and currently starting my 3rd. 💪🏾Lost 8 pounds and gained a lot of energy back by cutting out processed food and prioritizing sleep. 📜Earned an SEO certification through Hubspot 💻Started taking an HTML/CSS course for fun 📝 Wrote down my goals for 2025 with actionable steps, milestones and completion dates. Social media is a big time suck for me and I knew I needed to take a step back. This allowed me to prioritize other areas in my life and actually be productive. I don’t want to jynx myself by saying “2025 is my year” but I am going into the new year with a sense of focus and clarity.
