🏆 Amsterdam’s very own vertical farm Growy has won the Best Farm Innovation prize at the 2024 Vertical Farming World Awards! 🏅 Out of eleven categories – Growy was nominated for Best Farm Innovation Award and Best New Vertical Farming Facility. 🌿 But what’s so innovative about their facilities? Well, their 7500m² grow space that features 12 columns, cultivates 60 different crops which produces over 450,000 kilos of microgreens to restaurants across the Netherlands and Belgium each year. 🤖 Let’s not forget about the tech! Operating entirely on full automation – their advanced robotics not only includes software to manage operations, but also collects data which analyses plants to refine growth strategies. 🌎 Growy’s overall mission is to grow crops that are local, affordable and provide sustainable nutrition to all. And they’re not the only Amsterdam-based startup with this mindset. 😋 Karma Kebab who produce plant based kebabs from Dutch vegetables want to encourage consumers to pick plant based options while Seaworthy are pioneering seaweed as a sustainable food source. 🔗 Read more about Growy’s state of the art facilities here: https://lnkd.in/efsWHT8x #InnovativeSolutions #TheFutureOfFood #VerticalFarming

Why did high-tech farming go bust? 🥀 Vertical Farming was one of the big new technologies of the early 2010s. I was certainly blown away when I heard people were growing lemons inside giant containers in Copenhagen! By cultivating crops vertically with less water and no pesticides, big vertical farms promised to revolutionise food production. So why are the same vertical farms going bust across Europe and the US just ten years after they boomed? For this episode of HardwareX, I journeyed to Cambridge, England, to talk with Vijja Wichitwechkarn about his vertical farming automation system MACARONS. Through the question of how to scale your technology, we examine why vertical farming keeps missing the goal, and how open-source innovation could propel it to become the food tech solution we all hoped for. Dive into the conversation here: https://lnkd.in/dE9DkX-x The actual technology is fully open-source and available via HardwareX: https://lnkd.in/dUHarsZB #opensourcehardware #hardwareX #opensource #verticalfarming #futuretech #podcast
