Bad actors! Have you ever watched a movie and while at it, you keep complaining about how the actor isn't a great actor? Well, it has happened to me a couple of times. I'd be watching a movie and I won't really be impressed by the actor's delivery. Sometimes, it could be in the way they talk, react or just overall bad acting. Now, you realize that in situations like this, the actor is doing a bad job interpreting that character, And so, the viewers do not get a total feel of the character. This also applies in Voiceovers. As a voiceover artist, one of the most important things to work on achieving is BELIEVABILITY! This lies in your ability to interpret your script. Understand the various tones, the highs, the lows, the emotions etc Your listener should easily be able to understand the character you're portraying or the message you're putting out. Some time ago I posted an incomplete list of Character-Creation Springboards. There were 12 techniques on the list. I’m happy to announce the list is now...well, it’s still incomplete. I’ve got more for you though!! I want to thank Christi Bowen at Tennessee Voice Over Studios for recently hosting my Complete Character Creation webinar. Even that title is incomplete: because we still haven’t found ALL the ways to create characters. We DID focus on how to flesh them out once made and make them complete in and of themselves. We happened to have focused in that class on the grounded-acting style genres though the techniques for character creation are certainly not limited to genre and a technique that works like gangbusters for Genre A just might surprise you if you apply it to Genre B where you think it might never work. They are supported by a team of professionals: the playwright, stage director, fellow actors, and technicians. As a speaker, invite others into your process. Ask for advice from a mentor or a friend. Small changes can make a huge difference in #communicating your ideas. 🎯 2️⃣ Practice stage presence 🎬: Acting is highly physical. Actors keep the audience on the edge of their seats via the tension of their bodies. Speakers can learn stage presence as well. It’s more than keeping eye contact. It’s about using the expressiveness of your body, mind, and soul onstage in a manner that compels the audience’s attention. 👀 3️⃣ Play with pace 🎼: Pay attention to how actors use vocal pauses, allowing the #audience to digest what has been said. Vary your speaking pace in a way that conveys the points you are making. Plan your gestures and words, then plan your pauses and stage movements. This will give your presentation a natural flow. 🌊 The way you deliver your speech can be as impactful as the content itself.
