#ICYMI PowerHouse Texas Energy Policy Advisory Council member Joshua Rhodes, PhD co-authored this new report from the Bureau of Business Research (BBR) at the IC2 Institute examining the economic impact of advanced nuclear energy in Texas. The report was commissioned by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, and comes on the heels of the release of the Texas Advanced Nuclear Reactor Working Group’s final report.

The Bureau of Business Research (BBR) at the IC2 Institute predicts that developing an SMR industry in Texas could generate: 148,000 jobs annually $50.6 billion in new economic output $27.3 billion in worker income Texas is well-positioned to lead in SMR development, leveraging its manufacturing and energy strengths. Smaller #nuclearenergy technology could play a role in bolstering the U.S. nuclear industry due to potential #economic advantages over traditional plants, a University of Wisconsin-Madison expert says. That’s according to Dr. Ben Lindley, assistant professor of #nuclearengineering and #engineeringphysics at the university. He spoke yesterday during a seminar focused on small modular reactors and #microreactors, hosted by the Wisconsin Energy Institute. He noted about 90 nuclear reactors are operating in the United States, and several had been closed down in recent years due to economic reasons, such as cheaper gas and variability in #energy prices. But over just the past two years or so, other factors have driven “a dramatic reversal of fortunes” for #nuclear, as data centers drive higher electricity demand amid higher gas prices linked to the war in #Ukraine. “So now, there are currently plans to restart at least two of the ones that shut down … and the current plants are also thinking about how they drive even more power out of their existing plants,” he said, noting that will require substantial investments in these facilities. 🔎 Read more at https://lnkd.in/gXKjarHc

In previous posts we have looked at the significant resource that #China is allocating to #fusiontechnology and more recently European projects, such as ITER Organization. Today the focus is on N America. Here are three reasons why the region is important for fusion technology: 1️⃣ In the global private sector, the majority of fusion developers are based in North America. 👉According to Fusion Industry Association, more than 50% of the 45+ private companies operating globally are located in North America. 👉And US companies have attracted significant funding to date (see chart below). 2️⃣ As for the public sector, the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California delivered a world first in December 2022. 👉Physicists working at the laser-fusion facility announced the generation of more energy from a controlled nuclear fusion reaction than was needed to power the reaction. 👉One scientist described this surpassing of “energy breakeven”, a goal that scientists have pursued for decades, as being a “Wright brothers moment” for fusion research. 3️⃣ #Regulatory frameworks will be critical to enable the development of #fusionpower. 👉Fusion is a different technology to nuclear fission, with fewer concerns about safety and waste. Therefore, it is important to implement regulation appropriate for fusion and that is not unnecessarily onerous. 👉In 2023, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) voted to create a separate regulatory framework for fusion. 👉In April 2024, US senators introduced a bill to establish the Fusion Energy Act.
