Wrote this blog post last July about how museums can be less racist. I begin by discussing a recent dissatisfying experience at The Art Institute in Chicago and then dive into my own thoughts and research about strategic plans surrounding anti-racism. I wrap it up by highlighting some museums that are doing it right like The Tucson Museum Of Art. Let me know what you think, and visit my website for more blog posts, paintings & museum exhibition design.

🚨 UPCOMING EXHIBITION 🚨 We’re incredibly excited to announce The Art of Subversion. This first-of-its-kind exhibition will feature a provocative blend of street art, tattoo-inspired art, and functional glass art. The term ‘subversion’ is defined as “the undermining of the power and authority of an established system or institution.” With that, the goal is to initiate a broader conversation about how artwork is understood in our contemporary world. For decades, street art was seen as no more than vandalism, and only recently has it gained recognition for its cultural value. Similarly, while the traditional medium of tattoo art has been around for centuries, it has only been in the last few years that our society has shaken the stigma associated with the art form. The same cannot exactly be said for functional glass art, more simply known as ‘sm💨king 🅿️ipes’… I mean, I can’t even type the words normally here without getting this post flagged!! As with tattoos, the art of 🅿️ipe making and the medium of glass blowing has a profound history, yet it is an outsider in the art world. We hope this exhibition can help shift our collective perspective of these underrepresented forms of artistic expression. ••• WHEN: Friday, September 13, 5 - 8 PM WHERE: Rehs Contemporary 20 West 55th Street NYC ••• #streetart #tattooart #art #arte #contemporaryart #functionalglass #rehscontemporary #artexhibit #artexhibition #newyorkgallery

😱 The Scream at The Munch Museum 😱 Did you know there are several different versions of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”? The two painted versions are on display at @munchmuseet.no and in the National Museum of Norway. The Scream (1910?), exhibited at MUNCH, has been the centre of extensive debate over the years as to when it was actually painted. Different arguments suggest that it was painted in 1906, 1910 or between 1915-18. In an attempt to solve this mystery once and for all, MUNCH collaborated with researchers from the University of Antwerp and HIROX Europe. The researchers performed detailed investigations of pigments and paint layers of the painting using high-tech equipment (against other artworks with confirmed dating) in an attempt to more accurately date this work. 🔬 Considering the large amount of collected data, solving this mystery will take several months, but we’ll let you know when they find out. In the meantime, The Scream (1910?) is back on display at the @munchmuseet.no 😱 🖼️

Artist Talks: Sunday, Sept. 22 | 2:00 PM | Trees, Water, Sun, Dwellings | Karen Klee-Atlin | Just Another Thought | Chaloupka, Descoteaux, Hefland | https://lnkd.in/gbaXDZqr | Just Another Thought | Chaloupka, Descoteaux, Hefland | This exhibition was originally meant to be Jacques Descoteaux’s solo exhibition. While the work of the three artists is significantly different, it seems to fit nicely on a continuum—from realism in Carole Chaloupka’s sculptures, to Jacques Descoteaux’s semi-abstract work, to Victor Hefland’s abstract sculptures. What seemed at first to be just another thought, eventually became reality – Just Another Thought. Trees, Water, Sun, Dwellings | Karen Klee-Atlin | My work centers on the natural world particularly where it meets with human disruption. To that end, I’m very interested in documenting the points where there may be a clash between conservation and commerce. This tension can be felt through the colours I use and through my choice of imagery.

The challenge of art forgery is present within the institutional (museum) system as the collective expertise is capable of failure to determine what is a fake artwork. Read Hephaestus Analytical latest informative post.
Both of these Popovas are from museum collections, can you tell which is a forgery? There are countless examples of museums acquiring and displaying forgeries throughout the history of art. The Courtauld Gallery, London and the Ludwig Museum, Cologne have both recently held exhibitions displaying forgeries that had been acquired and displayed throughout each institution’s histories.
