I have so much to say about #PIP - the history of the benefit goes back a long way. It’s not that long ago PIP replaced Disability Living Allowance (DLA). We’re in unprecedented territory here and it’s a dangerous moment for disabled people in the UK. The question I’m asking is… does the Government even need to ‘overhaul’ PIP? I think PIP works OK - accepting that it’s not perfect of course in relation to claiming assessments, challenging decisions etc. Changing and overhauling PIP will put enormous strain on disabled people reliant on that support. Many PIP recipients need that money to provide some resemblance of financial stability and resilience. Removing or reducing PIP support would be catastrophic from an independence perspective. PIP is what I call a ‘LIFELINE’ benefit. The risk of harm to vulnerable people through PIP changes cannot be underestimated. https://lnkd.in/eCBvpq5V

Have your say about changes to the disability benefit (PIP) The DWP has set out options for reforming PIP which includes: Moving away from a fixed-cash benefit system to vouchers or payments based on people submitting receipts for expenditure. Redesigning assessments to target disabled people and people with a formal diagnosis. Making assessments more linked to a person’s condition. Placing more responsibility on local services to better meet disabled people’s needs. Some of these proposed changes and spending cuts could have a serious impact on disabled people. You can respond to the consultation by completing the online form below before Tuesday 23rd July. https://buff.ly/3WfTMQq

I think this is completely wrong! This practice started recently in our area, but what about other local authorities? I wondered Is it just for those supported in family homes or does it apply more broadly? Disabled young care leavers are increasingly facing financial pressure as some LAs are now including the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment in their care assessments, taking a percentage toward care costs. This undermines the purpose of PIP, which is meant to support independence and cover disability related expenses. As a result, many are left with reduced funds —disabled young people deserve better! #DisabilityRights #CareLeavers #PIP #FinancialFairness #IndependenceMatters #EqualRights #AdultsSocialCare
