We had the pleasure of attending the Westminster Insight-Get Active sport strategy meeting in London last week. It was great to meet and hear from leaders in the sporting and health field and understand more about government and country wide priorities for health in 2024-2029 so we can bring those influences into Cumbria. If any of our Cumbria third sector friends would like to know more about the meeting or read the slides please get in touch with Lisa or Julia.

📢 Last chance to complete the survey! We're proud to be supporting Sport England, Move Consulting and Active Partnerships with #PhysicalActivity4HealthPathways. Funded by Sport England, the aim is to better connect the health and physical activity sectors across England, helping those living with, or at risk of, a long-term health condition. They want to ensure that the health sector is supported so it can refer patients to a range of physical activity options. Already, they have enlisted the support of 39 community of practice members so that they can study the practical challenges and potential solutions at a local level. Their next step is to gather further insights and contributions from: ⭐ The health sector: Public Health teams and Integrated Care Boards ⭐ The physical activity sector: leisure providers, sports clubs, Active Partnerships etc You can help support by completing this survey: https://lnkd.in/e3NtQGqF

I agree. Sailing analogies about our health and disability systems are useful illustrations. Beyond the tech of Black Magic, Sir Peter Blake focused the Americas Cup teams on one single strategic question, ‘Will it make the boat go faster?’ Everything and everyone became focused on this single clear compelling goal. This single-focused winning management style affected enterprise-wide engagement, achieving the goal of making the boat go faster. Our health and disability systems also need enterprise leadership engaging every part of the system via shared values and strategic focus (including integrating technology) to achieve current and future goals, meeting Aotearoa New Zealand's healthcare needs now and into the future.
The latest edition of #DigitalHealth CONNECT magazine features a column from Leigh Donoghue Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora reflecting on the design and build of NZ's Black Magic America's Cup boat and how we need to apply the same approach to healthcare. "Build us the fastest boat you can: we will learn to sail it" Read it online free today https://lnkd.in/gkWYWxbz Sāvaia Stevenson Darren Douglass Scott Arrol MBA (Dist), MinstD Karen Wells

How is Health-enhancing Physical Activity in the #European Union? The 2024 report, by the World Health Organization, presents the most recent data on the implementation of the Council Recommendation on #HEPA across sectors, and sport is leading the way, with every country having sport-for-all initiatives. Despite the success of the implementation of HEPA actions, engagement in sport and physical activity has been dropping, with 45% of Europeans (≥ 15 years) in 2022 reporting that they never exercised or played sports. ➡️ Read the full report at https://lnkd.in/dtnZpG3r

Is It OK to Be Around People When You Have COVID? Noah Lyles competing in the Olympics with COVID has sparked the question By Rachel Nania and Suzette Lohmeyer Noah Lyles’ name will likely go down in history as the American bronze medal winner of the 200-meter run at the Olympics — who competed with COVID-19. Impressive, absolutely. Controversial, definitely. Though he says he quarantined as soon as he tested positive, he was around trainers and other athletes when he ran. And fans of all ages filled the stands. His decision made headlines: “Should Noah Lyles and Other Olympic Athletes Be Competing With COVID?” wrote Fortune, and “If Noah Lyles Had COVID, Why Was He Allowed to Compete in Paris?” asked The Hill. But why the backlash? Lyles didn’t break any rules. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee said in a statement that it followed all guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as local authorities and left it up to the individual athletes as to whether they were OK to compete. The question seemed to be more along the lines of whether what Lyles did is socially acceptable considering he might have infected others. Is that … unkind? Dangerous to those especially at risk — older adults and the immunocompromised? What do we call it? And to be clear, he wasn’t the only athlete there with COVID, according to the World Health Organization; 40 others tested positive in the last two weeks. So how does the current culture around COVID match up with best practices? Should an Olympic athlete be expected to throw away four years of training and forgo the competition? The equivalent for us non-Olympic athletes is, say, missing your child’s wedding or a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet your favorite rock star. During the height of the pandemic, the answer from experts would have been a resounding yes. But what about now? Continued......please click on banner image below to finish reading this opinion piece. Posted by Larry Cole
