Experiences were shared, as well as ideas and recommendations for best practices in these domains. On November 19, 2024, Professor Bruce Lewenstein presented “Does Public Engagement Work? An Empirical Test,” a plenary lecture at the Communicating Discovery Sciences symposium, which took place in Stellenbosch South Africa. One argument for “public engagement with science” is that engagement activities will make science itself “better.” But what does “better” mean? In his talk, Bruce will explore how the public engagement program of the NSF-funded Center for Research on Programmable Plant Systems makes the science itself better.

Meet an EMBL ‘DORA champion’ Andrew Hogan, who is a member of EMBL’s Responsible Research Assessment Working Group. The Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) aims to establish solid, trustworthy strategies to assess research around the globe and across all academic disciplines. EMBL officially signed DORA in 2018 and convened a group two years later to help implement the principles and spread the word on the importance of rethinking how we can improve upon traditional research assessment approaches.
