Founder: “We’re thinking of compromising on a few terms to close this deal faster.” Investor: “And when that compromise costs you your values, how will you get them back?” Compromise can sometimes feel like the easy way out, especially when a deal or customer is on the line. But values, once diluted, are nearly impossible to reclaim. Allowing exceptions for the sake of convenience can set a precedent that erodes the foundation of your company—be it in your product, your team, or your partnerships. It’s better to lose a deal or a customer than to lose your values. Customers can be replaced, but your integrity cannot. Founders: Know where to draw the line and stand by it.
