🚊Extending the DLR🚊 As some of you may know, the ICE London, East of England & South East England has been leading a consultation on the DLR extension for Transport for London from Gallions Reach to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead. https://lnkd.in/ed3ExnYF In this consultation process, you were given the opportunity to give your input and opinions towards this proposal. We thank you for all the responses we received. These have been fed into the consultation in which the report and results will be released in the following months. Below is a brief overview of the responses given by our committee (ICE London ECN) and the senior ICE London committee: 1. What should TfL consider so they progress with the project? (Whole lifecycle) To consider the social and environmental impacts, carbon impacts throughout its lifecycle, future connectivity options, value for money, e.t.c. As thinking points, please let us know if you have any comments on our proposals that would: 2. Help us to understand the impacts of our proposals on local people (whole lifecycle design to operations) 3. Help us understand the impacts of our proposals on you as a customer. Considering the short-term impact (possibly negative) for a long-term gain, new communities and job opportunities, better connectivity, challenges during the construction stages, strain on existing services, e.t.c. 4. Help inform our designs when we think about how our new stations could look and feel. Ensure that standard practices are included such as step free access. Each person was asked to select features they wanted to see and ranked them. Below is an image of the results. When asked about the type of retail space, they thought about coffee and groceries to go. A feature representing the heritage, culture and history of the area was not voted for as it is a nice-to-have and not an essential, however participants agreed that they would want to see it in some form, the same with parcel click and collect.

Boost for DLR extension as it wins public support #Londontransport chiefs have pledged to continue with plans to extend the #DocklandsLightRailway (#DLR) under the #RiverThames to Thamesmead after securing #publicsupport for the scheme. More than four in five people polled across four key locations to the east of the capital supported the #proposals to build two new #stations and a #tunnel in the area. Meanwhile 58% of respondents to a consultation run by Transport for London (#TfL) this year said the extension would make their #localjourneys quicker. The project would see the DLR built out from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside in a bid to unlock #economicgrowth and #newhousing. TfL chief #customer and #strategy officer Alex Williams said the scheme "presents a crucial opportunity to boost connectivity by linking two major growth areas with two new accessible stations". He added: "We will now progress work on plans for the cross-river extension of the DLR, which could see customers benefit from the early 2030s, and continue to discuss funding options with all parties." TfL submitted a strategic outline case to the government in 2023 outlining how the project could boost this part of the capital. An interim outline business case will now be developed over the next six to nine months. TfL said it was "likely draw on funding from the private and public sectors" and aimed to agree an affordable solution by 2025. #Construction could begin as early as 2028, the body added, with the line opened in the "early 2030s". Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said: "I'm pleased to see public support for these plans to extend the DLR to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead, which will unlock huge opportunities for London, support tens of thousands of new homes, deliver new transport connections and boost the economy, supporting the creation of thousands of jobs. "Enabling the infrastructure needed for the capital's growth is key to building a better, more prosperous London for everyone." Khan recently confirmed that he was considering plans for a further extension of the DLR to Belvedere. Article: https://lnkd.in/eabsCxaV

Public consultation shows strong local support to extend DLR in East London. Transport for London's (TfL) public consultation on plans to extend the DLR to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead show the majority of respondents are supportive. Work will now progress on developing the business case. Extending the DLR, says TfL, would support low-carbon developments in Thamesmead and Beckton Riverside, unlocking the delivery of up to 30,000 new homes along the extended route Investment in this scheme would also support a UK-wide supply chain, supporting growth and job creation across the country. According to the newly published consultation report on a cross-river extension of the DLR from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead, via Beckton Riverside, 58% of respondents said the extension would make their journeys quicker around their local area and 75% said it would make journeys into wider east and southeast London easier. The consultation, launched earlier this year, received 1,254 responses from members of the public and 29 from a range of stakeholders including pan-London transport user groups, local businesses, environmental groups, politicians and adjacent boroughs. In addition to the consultation, TfL ran sample polling in locations in Beckton, Gallions Reach, Thamesmead and Abbey Wood where 85% supported or strongly supported the proposals. A new DLR station would be built at Beckton Riverside, with a tunnel built under the River Thames linked to another new DLR station at Thamesmead. It would build on experience from 2009 when the DLR was extended to Woolwich Arsenal, tunnelling beneath the River Thames, with housing growth following in areas including Woolwich, Canning Town, and the Royal Docks... Great to see this latest project on adoption of common-use in airports. As outlined in the study, most US airports now have the infrastructure in place to enable common-use. Next step is to fully take advantage and start using the space in a more dynamic and flexible way. The potential is huge - we did a recent study on turns per stand per day between US and European airports. The US average is 6.1 turns per day - the comparable figure in Europe is 8.2 turns per day. Several drivers behind this - but the adoption of common-use is for sure one of them!
The Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) – which is sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration and administered by the Transportation Research Board – has released its latest research project on ‘Developing a Holistic Airport Common Use Program’. What makes a #railwaystation safe, and for whom? A research project examining how the built and social environment of railway stations affect the safety and security of travellers has released its final report. The results show that almost one-sixth of passengers have been victims of crime, and one-third feel unsafe while travelling. "The study highlights differences between vulnerable groups of travellers and emphasises the need to adopt measures to create a safer #publictransport environment, which varies depending on whether the station is rural or urban," says Vania Ceccato, a Professor at the Department of Urban Planning and Environment at KTH. "Lack of staff emerged as the leading cause of insecurity in the study, regardless of the passenger group. The primary suggestions for improvement were almost exclusively related to better #security and the ability to get in touch with someone and not be left alone," KTH research engineer Gabriel Gliori adds. The study is funded by Trafikverket and led by KTH Royal Institute of Technology in collaboration with Södertörn University. #crimeprevention #sweden

MADE Winter 2023/24 Project: Realistic Alternatives: Substituting the Worst Train Connections with Electrified Highways. Author: Lisa Rebecca Schmidt Project Description: The project is concerned with the question: Which routes between German cities are the fastest by car (in comparison to travel by train) and should be electrified for a "quick win" (compared to new train tracks) in climate action? This project makes the recommendation of electrifying the routes Rostock/Villingen-Schwenningen and Rostock/Konstanz. This is based on the attractiveness of train connections on the route and the degree of electrification of the connecting highways. Both routes show significantly longer travel times by train than by car, making the time-sensitive traveler more inclined to choose the car over taking a train. Additionally, the routes show a below-average degree of electrification, suggesting a high potential for improvement when adding new charging stations. The project recommends adding charging stations to the route, which is less costly and time-consuming than modernizing the connecting railways.
