Following an Emergency Delivery and a traumatic birth, Honey’s daughter suffered a neonatal stroke and spent weeks in Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU). Honey remembers, “Once we were home, I was having flashbacks of the birth, of her in hospital, and of all the horrifying things that I had experienced in the NICU. I wish I’d had known how common mental health problems were in pregnancy and in new mums; especially after being a NICU parent! I know how lucky I was to get the help I needed and want to encourage any women out there to ask for help. You are not alone. Let’s talk. If I can help one single person find the courage to speak up, then sharing my story of being diagnosed with PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) is worth it.” Honey’s gorgeous girl is now five years old and doing brilliantly! Read her story: link in bio/ https://lnkd.in/eFSSTaXh Honey is now working with the Perinatal mental health sector @hillingdonmnvp and Ickle Pickles, using her experience to help spread the word that there is help available 💙 @miraclemoonuk @blisscharity @mindcharity

Baby blues describe only a small portion of experiences that are classed as perinatal or postpartum mental health disorders. You can experience anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and mood disorders such as bipolar disorder all either while pregnant or after pregnancy. Working with a psychiatrist can help you to identify these disorders so that you can begin to treat them. Learn more in today’s blog: https://lnkd.in/dDmMH6by

Learn more about Post Partum PTSD and why it matters. "Although childbirth is usually considered a uniformly happy event, some women may experience a traumatic childbirth. Some will go on to develop a postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition we know very little about. We study the psychological and biological mechanisms underlying the various mental health trajectories in the wake of a traumatic delivery and what allows some women to be resilient and even grow psychologically. We are also interested in learning the ways in which distress in the mother may influence child development." https://lnkd.in/gVCxiUEr

Did you know that some research suggests that as high as 9% of all women experience Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after childbirth? 💗 Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is often overlooked because PTSD is typically associated with soldiers or emergency responders. In reality, over 30% of women may have some symptoms of PTSD after giving birth. Causes of Postpartum PTSD: ▪️ Real or perceived trauma during delivery or postpartum ▪️ Prolapsed cord, unplanned C-section, or use of vacuum/forceps ▪️ Baby going to NICU ▪️ Feelings of powerlessness or lack of support during delivery ▪️ Previous trauma (e.g., rape or sexual abuse) ▪️ Severe physical complications from childbirth Symptoms of Postpartum PTSD: ▪️ Reliving the traumatic event (childbirth) through flashbacks or nightmares ▪️ Avoiding reminders of the event ▪️ Increased anxiety and panic attacks ▪️ Feeling detached or unreal ▪️ Difficulty sleeping, irritability, and heightened vigilance 💗 Please remember, Postpartum PTSD is temporary and treatable with professional help. If you think you might have this, it’s not your fault. Reach out to your physician for support, as it’s critical to speak with someone if you’re struggling. This week is Maternal Mental Health Week. Poor mental health is unfortunately more common than people may realise, with 1in5 new mothers experiencing difficulties in the perinatal period 😔 29th April - 5th May 2024, with World Maternal Mental Health Day 2024 on Wed 1st May. #maternalmentalhealthweek #mentalhealthawareness
It's Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week 2024! But what is maternal/perinatal mental health? You may have heard the terms "perinatal mental health" and "maternal mental health" used interchangeably. Both refer to mental health during pregnancy and up to two years after having a baby. Most people have heard of postnatal depression or PND, but depression can also occur *during* pregnancy. Other perinatal mental illnesses include anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, and postpartum psychosis. Although more common than you might think, impacting at least 1 in 5 new and expectant mums, maternal mental health problems are very treatable. With the right care, it IS possible to recover and even thrive! This week, we want to show anyone struggling that they're not alone and they deserve support. 🔍 Understanding PPP: Postpartum Psychosis is a rare (1-2/1,000 births) but severe mental health emergency that can occur after childbirth. Unlike the more common "baby blues" or postpartum depression, PPP requires immediate medical attention because it is a psychiatric emergency. 🧠 Signs and Symptoms: Symptoms can appear suddenly, usually within the first 48 hours to 3 weeks postpartum, and may include: Extreme confusion and disorientation Hallucinations or delusions Rapid mood swings Insomnia Paranoia Thoughts of self-harm or harm to the baby 🚨 Why It’s Critical to Act Fast 🚨 PPP is a medical emergency and, sadly, is associated with very high rates of harm to self or others, including the baby. If you or someone you know shows signs of PPP, seek help immediately. Early intervention can make a significant difference in recovery. Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health. For more information, please visit my website www.sound-psychiatry.com or click the link in my bio! Around 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage, and the impact can be devastating. Some people who lose a baby can develop depression, anxiety or PTSD. The symptoms of PTSD include: 🔹 Vivid flashbacks 🔹 Feeling alert or on edge 🔹 Avoiding feelings or memories that remind you of the trauma 🔹 Physical sensations such as pain, sweating, nausea or trembling If you know someone who's had a miscarriage, listen and be there for them. Try not to judge and remember, there is no ‘at least’. If they have PTSD, learn their triggers so you can help to avoid them. Our friends at Tommy's are researching the link between miscarriage and mental health. Read more about it here ➡️ https://bit.ly/3PyLi2u. And if you need support during or after pregnancy or loss, you can speak to their dedicated midwives.
