We are looking for YOUR ideas about sessions for #NEMA2024! The theme of this year's conference, taking place November 6-8 in Newport, RI is "We the Museum: Toward a 'More Perfect' Vision for our Changing World." As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, now is a time to reflect on both the origin of America’s museums, and consider the field not only in its current state, but where it has grown from the past, and what it can be in the future. Just as America was by no means perfect at its inception, neither was the museum field. While the U.S. Constitution seeks a “more perfect union,” how can we work towards a “more perfect” museum world? How can we be better, if perfection is out of reach? Do you have a great idea for a session unrelated to the conference theme? We want to hear those too! Submit your session proposals by March 29, 2024. Click here for details: https://ow.ly/RxM150QQmvz

here are some lovely new resources created for D/deaf audiences on a very popular topic: space!
BSL at the Science Museum: space | Wonderlab+ Check out the first in a mini-series of YouTube shorts in British Sign Language. The amazing Naomi Postawa explores space-related objects around the Science Museum, London and shares what makes them so special. Behind the camera Tinashe Zvobgo, Emilia McKenzie & Lauren Ding worked with 'The Deaf Set' to consult and create our first Wonderlab+ content designed especially for D/deaf audiences. https://lnkd.in/ei7YkaJG

“Accessing the Museum.” The call for papers for the Fall 2025 issue of Exhibition—the journal of exhibition theory and practice for museum professionals published by the American Alliance of Museums—is now open. For this issue, we reflect on 35 years since the American Disabilities Act was signed into law and seek articles that examine the many facets of accessible exhibition-making such as: the pervasiveness of ableism within museums and how to dismantle it, evolving standards for universal and/or inclusive design, the role of language or multisensory interpretive strategies in creating accessible environments, and more. Proposals are due January 6. Read about the theme “Accessing the Museum” and how to submit a proposal at: https://lnkd.in/e6EMbkQ9 #museums #exhibitions #exhibitiondesign #accessibility

How do you adapt, stay relevant, shake things up? It’s a challenge for most organisations, particularly when faced with their audience’s dramatically evolving needs. When we’re asked to help, we deploy our three Designing for Disruption principles: 🗣️centring people and their voices to ensure authenticity 🎨 creating playful interventions to capture attention and opinion 💥 enabling everyone involved to challenge the status quo Want to know more? "At the NEMO European Museum Conference we will together explore the power museums have to face polarisation: Which possibilities do museums have to navigate controversies and foster dialogue and debate? How can museums better respond when caught in the crosshairs of socio-political debate? Additionally, the conference will discuss how to build strong relationships with underrepresented groups and foster their representation in polarising times. Finally, we will bring to light the growing political pressure that museums worldwide are grappling with; inviting and analysing possible (re)actions as models for prevention." https://lnkd.in/dMmtVqfa

Worth the wait: _Understanding Use: Objects in Museums of Science and Technology_, ed. Tim Boon et al. (Open Access). In which Alison Boyle, James Inglis, Louis Volkmer and I show in our chapter, 'The Immaterial Turn?' that despite curatorial hand-wringing, museum objects tend not to feature in high-impact peer-reviewed history of science and history of technology journals. Rather, we show, they are important for a range of other communities of practice and outputs. https://lnkd.in/e4awmvGr
