Are you based in the United States near the USC? The USC Pacific Asia Museum may be worth a visit to review for the JPH. As a museum dedicated entirely to the Pacific Asia world, USC PAM is uniquely positioned to help expand visitors’ understanding of historical and cultural contexts of the artworks displayed in our galleries and special exhibitions. Our museum focuses on representation of the incredible diversity of Asia and the Pacific Islands and their diasporas in each of our special exhibitions. Through object selection, didactics, and further contextual elements, the goal of our exhibitions is to instill curiosity and create meaningful insight for visitors to see the complexity of Asian art and culture and to connect to the contexts and meanings behind the artworks displayed. Because of this effort, visitors have the opportunity to expand their understanding of an incredibly important, yet often misunderstood, part of the world. Visitors also have the opportunity to find connections to their own unique experiences and interests by exploring our museum’s offerings> https://buff.ly/3Xo4BAb If you would like to write a review of an exhibition here, or another like it, contact the Journal of Pacific History Media, Film and Exhibitions Editors Chris Ballard and Leah Lui-Chivizhe, at editorial[@]jphinc.com.au to arrange a review submission. Note: unsolicited reviews are not submitted by the JPH. #Exhibition #Review #Pacific #PacificHistory #History #TuesdayTips

Memory scholars & P/CVE practitioners working on #memory after #terrorism , you are warmly invited to take part in this excellent research by Kostas Arvanitis!
Have you been involved in collecting, documenting, digitising or engaging people with spontaneous memorials, after tragic events such as mass violence attacks or disasters? If so, please consider completing this online survey: https://lnkd.in/eAWauhG4. The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete. The survey is part of an international study titled Museums and Spontaneous Memorials. A Museology of Trauma (https://lnkd.in/eAvkT_qg). The project is funded by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The results of this survey will inform the design of resources and guidance to support cultural professionals and organisations facing the challenges of forming and managing collections of spontaneous memorials. The survey will be active until Monday 15th July 2024. Please forward this to anyone interested. Any questions, please let me know.

📣 Institute Spotlight: Restoring Cultural Context 📣 🌎 Indigenous Knowledge Systems & Repatriation Dr. Jessie Loyer, a featured panelist at ID:EALS 2024, explains how repatriation helps repair cultural fractures by restoring the context of artifacts, which are often viewed in isolation within museums, rather than as part of a holistic knowledge system. #IndigenousKnowledgeSystems #ArtifactContext #InformationLiteracy #InformationAndIdentity 🎞 Clipped from her presentation titled, “Collections Are Our Relatives: Indigenous Interventions” 📚 Established in 2021 by the Purdue University Libraries and School of Information, the Institute for Information Literacy at Purdue (IILP) supports research that examines complex information challenges to develop information literacy models that enable people to successfully navigate and contribute to today’s information environment.

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to present at the American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR) Annual Meeting on the topic “Digging through Paper: New Insights from Seh Gabi (Western Iran) through Legacy Data.” In my presentation, I highlighted the importance of revisiting legacy collections, focusing on the Seh Gabi collection housed at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), and shared the methodologies I employed to effectively manage and analyze this significant collection. #conference #museums #legacy_collections

🛑 DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING! This is what we hear and see in museums, galleries and historical sites all the time. 🏺 Of course, as heritage professionals, we want to preserve the collections. Accidents happen, as we've seen recently with a little boy breaking an amphora at the Hecht Museum. 🤚 But is there a better way to go about this than the usual 'Don't Touch' sign? 👇 I've put together a few alternatives in the slide show below, and I'd also suggest: 👍 Investing in Front of House training, so your staff can explain (in a friendly and informed way) why some things can't be touched. 👍 Having an accessible handling collection so visitors CAN touch the real things sometimes. 👍 Highlighting the work of conservation staff, so visitors understand the effort (and cost) involved in preserving and interpreting collections for all. ✍ I'd love to know any examples of good practice you've seen too! #museums #objecthandling #heapoffacts #conservation #museumlabels 🏛 I help arts and heritage students and professionals improve their communication skills and confidence. 👩🏫 👋 Need help with museum displays or staff training in English? Let’s connect and chat! Don’t forget to follow me and ring the bell 🔔 on my profile to catch all my posts.

Yesterday, through Streamable Learning by ClickView, students explored the galleries of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and journeyed 4,500 years back to the Giza plateau in ancient Egypt. For 40 minutes, during their school day, students from across the country went beyond the textbook to interact with and learn from Dr. Lawrence Berman, Chair of the Art of Ancient Egypt, Nubia, and the Near East Department. Providing equitable access to subject matter experts is essential for deepening students' learning experiences. #k12education,#EdLeadership,#k12leadership,#StudentEngagement,#EquityInEducation,#SchoolLeadership

What is a museum, really? 🤔 The ICOM says it’s a “permanent institution in the service of society… fostering diversity and sustainability… accessible, inclusive, and participatory.” The Museums Association says it’s a place for “Inspiration, learning, and enjoyment… holding collections in trust for society.” A recent 5-star reviewer of the Natural History Museum said it’s “a fascinating and awe-inspiring place…the perfect spot for both a fun and education experience”. After reading so much about museums, it’s got me curious… And now I’m asking LOADS of questions about it: Is there a limit to the size of a museum? (Could I create a “museum” in a shoebox? Could a city itself be classed as a museum?) Where does a museum’s “status” start and stop? What if a digital museum is down for maintenance—does it stop being a museum for that time? And where do the boundaries lie between a museum and an archive? (Hoping someone in my network can help with this one!) And then there's the old-school vs. new-school approach to museums—do we prioritise preservation or the public experience? How does that affect the definition of a museum? I’d love to hear what you think! 🏛️ #MuseumDebate #Museums #Heritage #Curator
