🍎 Why Food Packaging Matters More Than You Think Food packaging is everywhere—but it’s so much more than a wrapper or a box. It’s a key player in keeping our food fresh, safe, and easy to use. Here are some insights you might not know about: 📦 1. Layers of Protection Packaging works in layers: Primary packaging (like a cereal pouch) directly protects food. Secondary packaging (like the box) holds multiple units together. Tertiary packaging (like a big shipping box) makes transporting large amounts safe and efficient. These layers ensure food reaches you in perfect condition! 🌍 2. Fighting Food Waste More than 25% of food is wasted because of poor packaging. A well-designed package keeps food fresh for longer and prevents leakage or spoilage during transport. 🛡 3. Protecting Food from Damage Packaging shields food from physical harm (like bumps during delivery) and environmental factors (like light, moisture, and germs). Without this protection, food wouldn’t stay safe to eat. 💡 4. Saving Energy and Resources Did you know that packaging helps save energy? For example, the energy used to make a simple bag for bread is far less than the energy wasted if the bread spoils. Smart packaging prevents waste in more ways than one! 🌱 5. Supporting Sustainability Eco-friendly materials and designs, like reusable or recyclable packaging, are becoming more common. They help reduce waste and protect the environment. #FoodPackaging #Sustainability #Freshness #Innovations #EcoFriendly #FoodSafety #PackagingSolutions #WasteReduction #foodengineering #SmartPackaging #FoodScience #SupplyChain #PackagingDesign #EcoPackaging #shelflife

❞𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟲 𝗼𝗳 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆❞ 🌍 How smart packaging design can help reduce food waste globally 🌍 The UN estimates that one-third of all food produced is wasted—a staggering number with massive environmental impacts. Packaging can help tackle this by extending shelf life and preserving food quality longer. Here’s how: •𝔹𝕒𝕣𝕣𝕚𝕖𝕣 ℙ𝕣𝕠𝕡𝕖𝕣𝕥𝕚𝕖𝕤: Advanced materials in flexible packaging, like high-barrier films, prevent oxygen, moisture, and light from reaching the product. This slows spoilage, helping food stay fresh on shelves and in homes. •𝕄𝕠𝕕𝕚𝕗𝕚𝕖𝕕 𝔸𝕥𝕞𝕠𝕤𝕡𝕙𝕖𝕣𝕖 ℙ𝕒𝕔𝕜𝕒𝕘𝕚𝕟𝕘 (𝕄𝔸ℙ): MAP involves adjusting the gas composition inside a package to slow down spoilage and maintain freshness, especially in perishable items like fruits, vegetables, and meats. It’s a technique that’s proven to cut waste significantly. •ℙ𝕠𝕣𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 ℂ𝕠𝕟𝕥𝕣𝕠𝕝 𝕒𝕟𝕕 ℂ𝕠𝕟𝕧𝕖𝕟𝕚𝕖𝕟𝕔𝕖: Single-serve and resealable packaging options help consumers take only what they need, reducing the risk of leftovers spoiling. Plus, resealable designs allow users to safely store opened products for longer. Reducing food waste isn’t just about the environment; it also saves resources like water and energy. By innovating in packaging, we’re making strides toward a more sustainable future, one meal at a time. 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒓: 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘺 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘶𝘳. 🌍 Packaging extends shelf life and reduces food waste! Ahead of #InternationalFoodWasteDay, Marcus Teghammar, Product Manager for Duniform®, shares how packaging makes a difference: "Sealing food in protective packaging preserves quality longer and uses less material. With techniques like MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging), we can drastically extend shelf life and reduce food waste.” At Duni, we are experts in packaging solutions and have the right solutions for your needs. We continue to reduce material use but never compromise on functionality, because food waste has a much bigger climate impact than packaging. #DuniGroup #Duniform #FoodPackaging #Sustainability #FoodWaste
Packaging can extend shelf life and reduce food waste ✨ Sunday is #InternationalFoodWasteDay, Marcus Teghammar, is the Product Manager for Duniform®, the concept for sealable food packaging solutions. He tells us more about the role packaging plays in reducing food waste. "Sealing food in protective packaging is one of the best methods to preserve our food products, because the quality of the food remains stable for longer and you use less material than you would with a lid. By minimizing the exchange between the inside and outside of the packaging the shelf life of the food is generally extended. If you also package the food with a protective atmosphere inside, commonly referred to as MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging), you can achieve drastic increases in the shelf life and even less food needs to be wasted." The sustainability conversation regarding food packaging has, in the past, revolved a lot around reducing the material in the packaging itself, but now we are seeing a broader approach to the subject. "Although we need to continue working with efficient use of material in our packaging, we must never compromise on function. Food waste has a much bigger climate footprint than packaging and also costs the customer a lot of money. When we develop new food packaging solutions, the food must always be at the forefront. We constantly need to ask ourselves: how do we protect food in the best way? That is how we truly make the food packaging more sustainable” #DuniGroup #Duniform #FoodPackaging #Sustainability #FoodWaste

Recognising the International Day of Food Loss & Waste Observing the FAO International day of awareness of Food Loss & Waste also highlights the important role that packaging, if designed intuitively, can play in minimising food loss & waste across a value chain. Whilst the primary function of packaging has always been to protect, contain, preserve and transport a product from paddock to plate, the function of intuitive Save Food Packaging Design to minimise food loss and waste is only now being discussed across the globe. By definition Save Food Packaging is designed to minimise or prevent food waste from paddock to plate using innovative and intuitive design features that can contain & protect, preserve, extend shelf life, easily open and reseal, provide consumer convenience and portion control; all the while meeting global sustainable packaging targets. (Francis, C., Kelton, N., Ryder, M., Lowenstern, B. Lockrey, S., Verghese, K) Without adequate design features and packaging that is fit-for-purpose, food can potentially be wasted all the way through the value chain to the household. The costs of such waste can be significant for a business and leaves an indelible footprint on the environment. By modifying packaging design at the start and ensuring that the world-first Save Food Packaging design guidelines are followed in the New Product Development process, food loss and waste can be minimised across a value chain. The intersection between innovative and intuitive Save Food Packaging design and food loss & waste needs to be discussed more openly in the industry across the globe. Everyone has a role to play. #fao #unido #savefoodorg #interpack #worldpackagingorganisation #australianinstituteofpackaging #rmit #wageningen #packagaingthatsavesfood #savefoodpackagingdesign #flwday #flwday2024
