Japan is working to make digital payments easier for international travellers. The government's New Tourism Nation Promotion Basic Plan, launched in April 2023, is driving this transformation. A key part of the plan is the introduction of Japan’s own QR Code (JPQR) by 2025, making QR code and barcode-based payments more widely accepted. This initiative aims to improve efficiency and trust, ultimately enhancing the satisfaction of tourists. The plan also includes facilitating cross-border payment acceptance through new merchant acquiring systems and linking with countries that use similar QR system. With the increasing use of digital payments and a non-cash payment ratio of 39.3% in 2023, Japan aims to make Expo 2025 in Osaka, the world's first cashless fair.
