Japan is working to make digital payments easier for international travellers. The government's New Tourism Nation Promotion Basic Plan, launched in April 2023, is driving this transformation. A key part of the plan is the introduction of Japan’s own QR Code (JPQR) by 2025, making QR code and barcode-based payments more widely accepted. This initiative aims to improve efficiency and trust, ultimately enhancing the satisfaction of tourists. The plan also includes facilitating cross-border payment acceptance through new merchant acquiring systems and linking with countries that use similar QR system. With the increasing use of digital payments and a non-cash payment ratio of 39.3% in 2023, Japan aims to make Expo 2025 in Osaka, the world's first cashless fair. Japan’s 🎎 tourism surge 📈 is straining domestic credit card 💳 companies, with losses potentially reaching ¥30 billion this year. 📉 As Japan welcomes record tourists, domestic credit card companies face rising losses, prompting considerations of higher fees for foreign-issued cards. This move could also reshape the payment landscape for international visitors and local merchants. Will it be fair for companies to consider higher fees for foreign-issued cards to offset costs, which could impact merchants and international tourists? 🤔 #fintech #cards #creditcards #finance #banking

Last week at the Mastercard Asia Pacific Travel Payment Forum, Netstars, with Agoda, Hotel Management Japan, Worldpay and Mastercard's successful pilot in Japan was showcased. With Japan's tourist arrivals at record highs, demand from overseas travel agents for Japanese hotels to handle VCN payment was increasing, but most Japanese hotels still preferred bank-based overseas remittances which is commonly used in Japan. This Mastercard Virtual Card Number (VCN) corporate payment system for hotels in Japan was launched with the aim of significantly improving operational efficiency and strengthening risk management measures. Using NETSTARS’ straight-through processing, Agoda issues a Mastercard VCN based on guests’ reservations, checkout information and provides payment processing to hotels, allowing hotels to receive virtual card payments directly without manual intervention. This is the first development and provision in Japan of a platform that specializes in billing and payment processes via the use of virtual card numbers (VCNs) to connect domestic hotels with overseas travel agents. We all love it when we aren’t made to wait to pay at the counter or are presented with the right option while making an online #payment. Considering the vast options or changing preferences that consumers have today, a key to online #conversion is facilitating transaction with minimum effort on part of the shopper. It can be difficult to assess when and where to display which payment method. #Payment specialists are now dynamically displaying the preferred payment methods. The objective is to offer the most apt option depending upon a shopper’s device and location. Travel merchants can also look at other dynamic #checkout features that shoppers are becoming accustomed, too. Merchants are now evaluating how to dynamically display local checkout experiences customized to each customer’s location, language and local currency. How are travel merchants going about the same for travel shoppers from the Asia Pacific region? How does it lift the conversation rate as well as the transaction value in the travel sector? Earlier this week, I got to experience firsthand how Mastercard is helping to shape the future of travel and urban mobility. In Hong Kong, Mastercard has collaborated with MTR Corporation Limited 香港鐵路有限公司 to allow cardholders to use their contactless credit and debit cards at MTR entry/exit gates, making travel smoother and hassle-free. You simply tap your Mastercard or mobile device and go! International visitors can also make contactless "Tap & Go" payments across Beijing's transit system using overseas-issued cards. Mastercard, supported by the People's Bank of China, the Beijing municipal government, and the city’s urban rail transit system was the first international payment brand to be integrated into China’s urban rail system. And soon, local cardholders will be able to use their new ‘China Mastercard’ cards to pay their fares too. Both examples are a game-changer for tourists like me who prefer cashless, simple travel. It was fantastic to see Hong Kong and Beijing joining cities like London, New York, Amsterdam, Milan, Sydney, and Singapore in embracing these innovations. But it's not just transit where Mastercard is leading the way. Mastercard is at the forefront of enhancing the experience for international visitors by integrating global cards with local digital platforms like Alipay and WeChat, simplifying the payment experience and boosting convenience. This enables personalized experiences, supports economic growth and helps make China more accessible to tourists. Seamless payments, personalized services, and economic impact - Mastercard is shaping the future of travel and connecting the globe! #ContactlessPayment #Innovation #Travel #Technology #Tourism Dennis Chang Helena Chen
