The CCP Cloned America’s Leading STEM High School — and U.S. Educators Helped October 10, 2024 Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) in Fairfax County, Virginia, has come under scrutiny for its connections to Chinese interests. The school reportedly received $3.6 million from groups linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since 2014. This alarming revelation has prompted Virginia's Secretary of Education to request information regarding the school's ties to these entities. Concerns escalated when it was revealed that a TJHSST employee communicated with Chinese officials about creating a "How to Clone TJHSST Handbook," which included curriculum materials and operational plans. Critics argue that this collaboration raises questions about the influence of foreign entities on American education. In response to these developments, Virginia's government has vowed to investigate the extent of CCP influence in local schools. As the situation unfolds, parents and educators alike are left questioning the implications of such partnerships on the integrity of the educational system. https://lnkd.in/etYpS-ye

Having just done a keynote for the Tampa Bay Librarians - one in which I was supposed to mention the STEM festival (https://lnkd.in/gc_KZeMz) - it occurs to me that there are so many young people that we need to be the Guardians of Information. STEM is also about: - information science (understanding the what and how data, information knowledge and wisdom come together in stories) - digital preservation (a field my daughter is crushing on her snapchat) - partnership and community engagement We have so much value we can add when we understand that the Science Technology Engineering and Maths ARE ALL CHANGING ! We need more perspectives, more diversity, more collaboration across these "fields" that should never have been mono or single cultures. We are so much stronger and better when we weave what we have together.
The National STEM challenge is hosting their annual summit flying children and their families from around the country to Washington DC to compete. Many of these kids have submitted WONDERFUL ideas using AI to address challenges in their community. The organizers of the summit are seeking corporate sponsors to fund these trips, so that families that do not have the means can still have their children participate. If you have funds that can be used for this purpose, please reach out to Kari Byron https://lnkd.in/d_5dwS5Q

#newarticle | Black or mixed Black heritage students are still under-represented in the geospatial industry and the ‘knowledge access level’ to enter the industry tends to be a higher education degree. In an attempt to encourage Black or mixed-Black heritage students, Esri UK has partnered with Akama Fund, a charity dedicated to supporting students and facilitating accessible scholarships, to create a new scholarship program for them. Designed to support 60 higher education students, in disciplines related to the geospatial industry, the Geospatial Student Accelerator scheme will make awards totaling £30,000 in the first year. How can we make the geospatial industry more inclusive? Thelma Onyeka | Peter Wilkinson | #geospatial #geospatialindustry #inclusionmatters #inclusiveeducation #inclusion https://lnkd.in/gX93CkwR
