With over 100 million diabetics, India has unfortunately earned the title of the world's diabetes capital. But what makes this lifestyle disease dominate headlines daily? Diabetes is not just a condition—it’s a precursor to a cascade of life-threatening diseases, including Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and numerous other health complications. Despite the growing awareness, a significant care gap remains in understanding and managing diabetes effectively. This gap often stems from a lack of education about the long-term implications of the disease and how profoundly it can impact one's quality of life. What Can You Do if You’re Diabetic? Here are simple yet effective steps to bridge the gap in your own care: Shift Your Perspective: Diabetes is a lifestyle disease, and the solution lies in transforming your lifestyle—not relying solely on medications or waiting for quick fixes like new drugs. Eat Rrite, Exercise, Rejuvenate: Focus on sustainable habits that support your body holistically. Personalized Nutrition: Avoid fad diets. Seek guidance for a customized meal plan that aligns with your unique needs. Stay Hydrated: Water plays a vital role in regulating blood sugar levels. Work Out Regularly: Commit to at least 5 days of exercise a week—be it walking, yoga, or strength training. Prioritize Quality Sleep: Restful sleep is essential for hormonal balance and recovery. Mindful Eating: Choose complex carbs, lean proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables, all in moderation. And a Gentle Reminder Diabetes doesn’t need to define your life. With the right approach, you can overcome it. It starts with learning to Eat Rrite, Exercise, and Rejuvenate. If you’re ready to take charge of your health, let’s bridge the care gap together! While this is very relevant, most people don’t understand that healthy foods with diversity means fibre dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes & beans etc; less sugar laden foods means avoid refined & ultra processed foods; less saturated fats means avoid or reduce animal foods and palm oil etc. Eating a whole food plant-forward or plant - predominant diet high in fibre, high on phytonutrients and low in fat and unnecessary calories can help in prevention of diabetes even if you are genetically pre-disposed. There is enough and more evidence of putting type 2 diabetes into remission using lifestyle modifications. Start with 1 step at a time, 1 meal at a time, 1 day at a time. As a nutritionist & holistic health coach, I have worked with clients who have been able to not become diabetic from their pre-diabetes stage; who have put their diabetes in remission before they could get on medications and who have been able to reduce their medications under a doctor’s guidance as their blood glucose levels were coming down. #wfpb #wholefoodsplantbased #lifestylemodifications #nutritionist #holistichealthcoach #ownyourhealth #worlddiabetesday
