There’s a lot to love about living in rural and regional Australia, but sometimes living outside the cities can be hard. 🏡 Over the last decade, the Regional Wellbeing Survey has highlighted the challenges rural Australians face such as accessing GPs, childcare, and tradies. Findings have also shown that people living in rural communities are often more socially connected compared to those living in the cities. Data from the Regional Wellbeing Survey captures the opportunities and challenges faced by people in rural and regional Australia and helps mobilise solutions. Take part in this survey and help shape better outcomes for you, your family, and our community. 👉 Head to https://lnkd.in/dPeW3zqx to take part. #regionalwellbeing #survey #communities #farming #farmerhealth

Empowering women farmers is crucial for community development. They are often the backbone of agriculture, especially in developing nations. By providing them with equal access to resources, training, and decision-making, we can enhance food security, improve family welfare, and foster sustainable growth. Addressing the challenges they face is key to unlocking their full potential and driving progress in communities.

The #UnitedKingdom's progress towards achieving the #UNSustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs) present a nuanced landscape of achievements and challenges. While demonstrating notable advancements in climate change #policy and #sustainableagriculture, the nation faces significant obstacles in comprehensive SDG implementation. Recent policy changes, such as removing #winterfuel payments and introducing electric vehicle taxation, potentially compromise targets related to #poverty reduction, health, and social equality. The use of #commonsense and prioritizing the general public's #welfare is critical in navigating these complex policy landscapes. As the 2030 Agenda approaches its midpoint, the UK requires renewed commitment and innovative strategies to accelerate SDG progress. With only 21% of domestic SDG targets currently being effectively addressed, the government must develop more integrated policy approaches, enhance cross-sectoral collaboration, and ensure vulnerable populations are not marginalized. The potential for global leadership exists, but this demands sustained #political will, strategic policy development, and meaningful engagement across governmental, private, and civil society sectors. Careful consideration of policy implications, coupled with a holistic approach to sustainable development, will be essential in transforming challenges into opportunities for meaningful #societal and #environmental progress. This study assesses the state of housing and #homelessness in the Tłıchǫ region of the Northwest Territories. It examines the ongoing impacts of Canada’s colonial past and welfare system, sociocultural shifts within the Indigenous community, the constraints of a remote geography, and past and current housing policies to explore and offer potential solutions for this critical issue. Just spent an hour and a half providing advice/feedback to journalists from across what we call Canada after they pitched their story ideas regarding the Child "Welfare" System, and it's variances, from Coast to Coast to Coast. Lots of great focus areas, and areas that need a spotlight, or can use additional spotlighting. Very much looking forward to how their reporting projects shape up. Especially ones looking at the theme of decolonization within colonial systems, and amplifying people with complex identities who are criminalized by systems and punished for having prior child welfare involvement. Looking forward to sharing these reporting projects once they are done! #ChildWelfare #Journalists #Journalism #Canada #Advisor #Decolonization #Systems #Identities #DEI #Justice #Institutionalization #ChildProtection #Equity #Reporting #Stories #Narratives #Media #News #NewsStories #Stories

I have long admired Dr Rebekah Graham's intersectional analysis and advocacy. Nothing beats conversations about food security, income inadequacy, and intergenerational poverty to show the impacts of capitalist market systems and our class divide as a nation. Our middle-class memories have romanticised the working-class gardens of our ancestors and invisibilised the struggles of generations of women to achieve autonomy, education, and meaningful paid employment—the struggles of workers and unions to achieve fair pay and work-life balance. What is dangerous is that we are silent on the impacts of colonialism and our whiteness. We presume the systems we uphold are the best and fairest, and when people are marginalised in these, they need to be taught or their behaviours changed for their good. We no longer have the energy, resources, collective systems, daylight hours, or autonomy to choose a life that allows choice and sufficiency. Yet, we revert to expecting that of people with fewer resources, without permanent homes, and insufficient incomes—with all of the moral imperiousness of our Victorian grandmothers.

This year’s Anthropology Day Welfare States in Crisis is organized in collaboration with the Crafting Resilience and Prototyping Welfare projects. Anouk de Koning, Martha Kapazoglou, and Vénicia Sananès will deliver the keynote address! Reimagining welfare futures as things fall apart In Europe and beyond, welfare states are falling apart. In the face of volatile economies, growing precarity, and increasingly conflictual diversity, welfare states show themselves to be unable to live up to earlier social contracts, to sedimented sets of expectations and assumptions vis-à-vis the state. In this keynote, we examine how, in this context, welfare arrangements are being reimagined and remade. We focus on the work of imagination and refashioning done in state-sanctioned spaces and ask what future realities this prefigures. After a general discussion of current predicaments and changing welfare landscapes in Europe, two dispatches from the field, from Thessaloniki and Amsterdam, illustrate the different stakes and imaginations that shape Europe’s welfare futures. We invite you to join conversations about the current state and futures of welfare in and beyond Europe. 🚨 new publication 🚨 In "Who thinks ideologically about welfare state reform?" Mikael Goossen innovates political opinion research by shifting focus from "what" people thinks to "how" ideologically people think about politics on the left and right. He shows a greater tendency to think ideologically on the left compared to the right in a welfare state context. OA👇 https://lnkd.in/eTKZchQy #sociology #politicalscience #socialscience

To access our educational video materials, simply click on the provided link. https://lnkd.in/dDZrfXKn In today’s dynamic societal landscape, the concept of pre-adoptive leave is gaining recognition as a crucial element in supporting families and fostering strong parent-child bonds. Pre-adoptive leave, akin to maternity or paternity leave, acknowledges the significance of the transition period preceding the formal adoption of a child. This leave not only provides prospective adoptive parents with the necessary time to navigate administrative processes and prepare for the arrival of their new family member but also enables them to establish crucial early connections with their child. By affording families the opportunity to dedicate focused time and attention to the adoption process, pre-adoptive leave promotes emotional well-being and lays the foundation for a nurturing family environment. Moreover, recognizing pre-adoptive leave as a standard practice contributes to greater inclusivity and support for diverse family structures, reflecting the evolving needs and values of our society.
