I am inspired by the world of interfaith! Last week I presented to the wonderful members of the TORONTO AREA INTERFAITH COUNCIL and was immensely grateful for their rich and warm response. My topic was Wrestling with Ubuntu: Interfaith lessons from Africa, and the success stories I quoted came from the grassroots youth-led groups who literally know how to make something out of nothing. I spoke about the struggle to bring peace in a world that constantly chooses war, the commitment to unity in a world that loves separation, and the danger of having our faiths hijacked by those with a political agenda. I ended by telling them that it's up to us to remember the noble purpose of interfaith engagement. It takes a lot of courage, but the world needs every one of us. I ended with a quote from Becoming a Sun by David Karchere: "Your world needs your light. Your wisdom. Your intelligence. Your vision. You have the ability to light up your world so that the people in it can see. Faced with judgement or condemnation. Faced with prejudice and bias. Or faced with the dogged determination to imagine the worst that could happen and act out of fear of that. Bring your light. Not in other’s faces. Not as a bludgeon. Use your light to illuminate the path ahead. The light that illuminates not only what is, but what could be if we would only let it.
