NWO invests 1.5 million euros in research on flexible use of electricity in industry The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a €1.5 million grant to the 'FLEXPower' consortium led by Prof. David Smeulders of Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. The research focuses on more efficient electricity use in industry, a crucial step in addressing the current grid congestion problem. Hundreds of companies in the Netherlands are currently waiting to be connected to the electricity grid, a process that can take years due to existing grid congestion. The FLEXPower project aims to address this challenge by better matching electricity consumption to the fluctuating supply of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. A core aspect of the research is to develop strategies for flexible electricity use. This includes: Adjusting electricity consumption to available supply; Utilizing stored heat during periods of low power supply; Creating an industry with flexible demand power. This approach is seen as an essential part of a future sustainable and stable energy system. The project consists of a diverse group of experts and stakeholders: Prof. Koen Kok, Dr. Nilufar Neyestani and Dr. Christina Papadimitriou of TU Eindhoven; Dr. Gijsbert Korevaar of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences; various industrial partners including TNO, Alliander, Lamb-Weston, Pluss AT, Brabetech and Nobian. We are pleased to share our most recent CSEI working paper “Energy Sector Digitalisation, Green Transition, and Regulatory Trade-offs” by Manuel Llorca (CSEI), Golnoush Soroush (CSEI), Emanuele Giovannetti (ARU), Tooraj Jamasb (CSEI) and Daniel Davi-Arderius (UB). This research has been conducted as part of the Horizon Europe Project EDDIE. We explore key aspects and trade-offs of energy sector digitalisation related to: - Efficiency and innovation - Interoperability and standardisation - Centralised vs. decentralised solutions You can read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/d-rxmiXE Highlights Digitalisation plays a key role in transforming the energy sector, offering both opportunities and challenges: - The shift to clean energy demands digitalisation for efficient grid operation and integration of renewables - Establishing common standards and protocols facilitates entry into markets and promotes dynamic efficiency by enabling innovative data-driven solutions - If implemented rigorously, the economic benefits of digitalisation, especially smart meter implementation, enables market competition, consumer choices, and energy providers’ data usage - Regulatory frameworks need updating to ensure data access, incentivise digitalisation investments by grid operators, foster innovation, and prevent market dominance Lessons for policy - Prioritise data access and innovation to foster new tech and business models - Mandate interoperability, standardisation and clear definition of roles for seamless data exchange - Implement “common front door” solutions to exploit current decentralised solutions, while fostering competition, choice, and innovation - Prioritise consumer privacy and data rights with clear guidelines - Facilitate public-private collaboration to drive energy sector digitalisation #GreenTransition #Digitalisation #Economics #Innovation #Regulation
